Maybe paint the brick a dark grey, install a portico/overhand over the door, and use cedar for the door/shutters. My guess is in those examples where the wood is the home already stuck out that way and wasn't flat like yours.

I like your inspiration photos, especially the second to last one. With a portico like that your house would look fabulous.

Remove the shutters. I get a new door and lighting, as well.

I'd keep all of the brick and invest in a knock out landscape design.

Do you have gutters? Notice the rain chain in the brick house (second to last.) You could us them instead of leaders since you have such a nice overhang.

Here are your wood siding and dark gray in a version that is more flat to begin with; maybe you should consider it.

Here is your house with new windows, trim, etc using the elements you displayed in your inspiration photos. I am only good at Photoshop, no design talent.

I know this house is probably not even close to your style, but I'd like to show the color combination. Various shades of gray and black make a red roof stand out, especially if you paint the front door about the same color.

And although the ideas you have look really good, I think you could turn it into a nice modern version of a mediterranean home too. At least add some drama to the front door.

Turning this exterior modern is going to be more than "a bit." What kind of budget do you have?

And as much to the point, if you turn the outside modern, will the inside match?
