If it were me, I'd combine 40% Turface and 40% grit and 20% sieved top soil/potting mix. As noted in the link, water the cuttings only by misting the cuttings until growth is seen, then you can begin watering. Training yourself to not overwater is recommended.

Taylor, I missed that - I wouldn't wash them myself, but if you wanted to, rinse them and then put them out, as you have them in the picture above, on a cloth for them to dry in a warm area. What you don't want is water sticking around in the crown of the plant, so sitting them upside down to dry would be good.

Don't use turface or turface fines for rooting, it holds way too much water for that.

Finer mixes are generally better for rooting than very chunky ones.

Kevin, your post seems to me contradictory. Finer mixes hold water longer. Am I missing something there? But I'm in complete agreement about the fines (which I remove anyway, and save for throwing on iced-up paths) - Turface needs to be screened / sluiced first to get rid of the 'sand' that an average bag has.

Anyway, when rooting plants (as the OP appears to be doing - not sure), one is misting the plant, not the soil, so the mix is, at that time, of little import.

1. Pure Turface is bad for rooting.

2. Chunkier gritty mixes are not as good for rooting as mixes with finer substrates (which are not composed of only Turface).
