I am looking for low cost deign help with rug, curtains, and chandelier. I want to modernize the room. Thank you!

I know you want something low cost, but the room is pretty modern already. For the cost of all that other stuff, you might be able to get a nice modern table which would be fab with those chairs. Your table is such a prominent "not modern" element. One of those glass top trestle tables would be fab. to show off the chairs.

What should I do for the rug? Do the curtains need to be longer and put up higher?

You are only showing us 2 walls. Could we see the other 2 please? Without seeing the complete space my first thought is I would move the buffet to the opposite wall. it looks like it is on the wall that is the main walkway from the front of the room to the back. I would want maximum space on that side and the buffet to be out of the way. i would have another picture on the other side of the window to balance it or nothing either side.

I think you'd do well to raise the curtains and lower the chandelier a bit. A rug that picks up the colors of your art might be something to look into as well as a more contemporary chandelier. The rug below picks up the yellow in your art has the gray of your walls and curtains. The chandelier repeats the golden tones of the rug and repeats the white sideboard.

    LARGER DRAPERY!

And perhaps go with a patterned fabric!

We think some thicker window treatments and a rug with some blue in it might work well here. Below are some of our designs that might also help with some chandelier choices.

Thank you for all of the ideas! I can't move the cabinet piece because there is a window on the other side across from where it is now. The other side I didn't show is my kitchen. I would love a link on where to get some curtains without the grommets. I will make sure to get longer curtains so I can raise the rods. The room is painted a light grey. I would love some rug ideas from Wayfair that are not wool. Also, I like the idea of a gold chandelier. Can you please send a link? thank you!!

This is the first notice I have gotten on this thread since my original comment. Darn Houzz. Your art work fights with the coolness of your dining room furniture.

Look on Half Price drapes or pottery barn for drapes or even Ballards. Lots of grommet less options.

Any of these drape colors and styles would work. Going with a faux silk Dupioni would make the space more formal and add some sheen

On your console bring in two lamps. Blue would be a pretty accent on top of that console

Bring in cool art tones to match the space. I would do a graphic animal print under the table in gray and white. That will add in an interesting base and back drop for your table.

I love that first ball chandelier. That’s my favorite. Can you please recommend one more grey/white rug? I don’t think I want to do animal print. I also want to do a soft rug but it has to be polyester because of my husbands allergies. also Can you show me how to set up the lamps, candles, tray, etc... on the hutch? Thank you so much!!!

Be mindful of the measurements on that chandelier. It may be too small. I can't tell without knowing the measurements of your room, table and ceiling height.

Here are some more rug options. I like the first one but know shag is not the best option for under a table. Also make sure you get a large enough size so that your chairs sit entirely on top of the rug. Ideally it should have a 3' perimeter outside the table but I suspect your room may not be large enough for that.

Thank you!! I like the first rug pattern the best too but I don’t think shag will work. Might be too tough pulling the chairs in and out. I will check on the measurements the chandelier too, thanks!

here are some inspiration photos of lamps on buffets

What is opposite the buffet? If it is a window you may want to place a mirror above the buffet to bounce more light into the space.

Yes, there is a window across From the hutch. So, I should change to a mirror and lamps and no painting?

A mirror is always nice in a dining room but it’s a personal preference. Could can always set a smaller piece of art on a easel between the lamps on the buffet and in front of the mirror.

It's not an absolute no-no to put a buffet in front of a window. It is done in some of the photos that PP shared. Great ideas btw. I personally like your dining room table, so yes, depends on what you mean by modern whether you want to remove it or not.
