Freestanding Bathroom Vanity without a backsplash

Hi, I recently purchased a free-standing vanity for my master bathroom remodel. My contractor put it into place and I realized that it doesn't have a lip on the back to serve as a back splash. We are not tiling behind the vanity as it is just not in the budget. The contractor says that this is the trend, to have it look more like a piece of furniture, however these sinks are going to get a lot of use and I'm concerned about the water splashes over time what with face washing and all. At my request the contractor is looking for a remnant piece of stone to match the counter top, but so far no luck. Does anyone else have a bath vanity without a back splash? How is it working out. If this was a guest bath I would be fine with it...just not sure about it being the master.
