Home Office Needs Help

We moved into our house in September. For my job I have a home office. However, this room is the room where people put stuff if they don’t know where to put it. Hence why ski equipment is drying in there right now. There is lots of shelving in the office and I don’t really know what to do with it all. Once I get things in order people will not just be setting stuff places and will have to find a home for their miscellaneous items. Please give me some ideas of how to decorate my home office.

Nothing in office but office. Take the ski's to garage or shed. Your off to a good start. U can add shelves above the cabinet with leafs or art.

I would move the desk out of the corner too and put it in the middle of the room and make the current desk area reading nook.

First YOU have to know where you want to sit and work ...how much space you need on your desk and if you want to look out the window or into the wall and your shelves . And if you want to buy a nice desk , the size you need to put all your work papers or different computers or screens ... You have a nice big space to work with !!! Once you put everything YOU need in place... Including perhaps a sofa or one two chairs for guests to visit or just for you to relax ....paintings or photos on the wall not on shelves. Shelves are for folders , books ..things you need to store for work. You don't have much in it now ...but this could be a library / office ...? Go slow , just don't use this room as a storage place ...make closets or room in areas like basement or garages / attics for sports equipment ...or create a gym ...?

    Drool-worthy office room!

First, I think you need to choose an overall style. This should probably reflect your business. Is it a hip kind of business, or more traditional? Lots of color or muted? Relaxed or more formal? What do you wear while working? This might give you some ideas.

Do you like looking out of the window while you work? If so, float a large desk facing out of the window. It could be a statement piece, something special. Make sure the keyboard drawer or top is the right height for you.

Or... do you have to meet with people? Maybe a small "conference" table floated over by the window.

That window is such a great focal point.

Technology should be accommodated with a plan. But most important is where you want to sit while looking at a screen. That nook where the desk is right now looks cramped and gloomy. Think spacious and somewhere that will encourage you to sit (so work can beckon instead of turning you off).

Maybe a printer and/or fax machine belong on the current desk? Along with the bulletin board.

Do you need a TV for your job? If so, it needs a place.

An area rug that fills more of the blank space in the middle would be super-nice. Use color for the rug if you're going for more informal; a contemporary design (white on not-bright color?) if you want the room to look more spare but still interesting.

Since those cupboards have doors, you'll not have to worry about filling them for now. Who will give a rip if they're entirely empty?

My go-to budget way to liven up a room is to use plants. They take up space and add movement. Bring the room alive.

Also, you'll need a couple of lamps. A lamp for the desk, a floor lamp towards the corner, and perhaps a table lamp where you have the sculpture right now.

There ought to be a bigger margin around the orange artwork that's to the left of the window. I would choose something taller as well.

I would put a fairly large art piece on the empty wall that currently has a cupboard with the sculpture. If budget is an issue, find a poster you like and put it in a nice frame. Change the picture later.

If that's the edge of a coffee table, I think I'd choose something lighter and airier to go with the room. Glass top so you can see a nice rug underneath?

Not fan of Marie Kondo, but you need to do first is DECLUTTER, including all meaningless decor... Find a place in other rooms for everything that’s not related to your job, throw away the trash and put in boxes what have to stay. 2nd. DECIDE what do you need to work effectively, including the essential furniture and where to place them. 3rd. DECORE in your one and only style to reclaim this space as yours; and family stop to consider it a No-Mans-Land

Thanks all for your suggestion. So I am in sales so all I need for work is essentially my computer which I use with the monitor and the desk. Not sure I really want to buy a new desk to place in front of window as the space where the monitor is lots of space. I do spend a lot of time on the phone which I end up walking around the room. I do like having a big comfy chair in the room because I do also sit there when on conference calls rather then at the desk. I am fine to clear off the shelves as most of my work is in the storage closets on either side of the desk. What though do I put on the shelves?

Can you move the shelves? If so, I’d take out the ones by you desk out which would allow you to push the screen back a bit and give you more work space. Then you could add a pretty picture or bulletin board for function. If they are not moveable, then what do you need by your desk?

A lock on the door will help keep others’ stuff out. Then you can do the interior the way you want it. Reduce clutter, put files behind doors or in drawers. Add art, colored window shades or treatments, and colored pillows to lift the dull vibe. A little color will lift your spirits, too, and ideas will flow better.
Perhaps you do a modified mudroom by the back door.

On shelves u can place your office clips in a jar, office books, extra paper, staple, radio, basket of snacks, kleenexes, water bottle, other important items. If desk is in middle of room, what about the cords?

I can move the shelves in the desk area. I think I will look at moving the one shelf above the monitor either up or taking one shelf out. I do have two closets either side of the desk for storage. I could have some stuff out but that is one thing the room does not lack is storage.

If u like plants a tall plant at window or corner. Use 3m hooks if u need to hang clipboard or anything. Put your vase on the leaf cabinet.

I took the one shelf out over the computer monitor and I like the space better already. So now I only have two shelves. The one above the monitor I am going to add some office organizers such as magazine holders Etc. I also think a nice lamp and a different Office chair.

Karen Ullman - maybe I missed it - has anyone asked what kind of work you do in your home office?
