bold wallpaper

Anyone take a leap of faith and wallpaper with bold print? How’d it turn out? Looking for some reassurance!
My husband is not on board, but I want to put a dark bold print in just one wall in my dining nook. It coordinates with dining area and the tiny kitchen that is through the doors (paper background is almost same color as kitchen walls). He’s worried it’ll be too dark, but dining light is bright when on (and yes, I know, the light needs to be a few inches lower!).

I'm all for bold wallpaper in a small space such as a powder room, but it seems random on that wall. Can you post a picture of the entire nook area?

Basically what you see is all there is. The 2 walls. The photo is taken from an entry/open squared arch from entryway hall. The right side is open to the living space. That wall is the first thing you see as you entire the "living space"

So you want to do the wall the bench is on, correct? Not the one you have it taped to..

    Here's a couple of one-wallers... :)

Don't be scared, now. It will look spectacular.

You might "lose" your chandelier against the paper, so be prepared to replace that...otherwise I love it.

If I was going to wallpaper, I would consider doing both walls or just the long wall. No offense, but I don't care for that particular selection. Your wall color looks very pretty on my monitor. What color is it?

I would do it if you put it on both walls that are baby blue. However, that means removing the artwork. I also feel like there's a lot going on on the table top. Since the wallpaper has a lot of pattern and drama you will need to pare down everything else.

I would've done the short wall, not the bench wall as I love the art work and it will stay. Don't want it to get lost over wallpaper. Though I could consider that wall, but I think my husband may veto that... I will look at it again tonight

Wall color is BM Smoke which I love too.

I just love the colors and intensity of the wallpaper. I know everyone has different tastes.

Pic of full paper on a wall (from a magazine article)

In that case, I would not paper the smaller wall, only

Glo European, the placemats were out because we had just finished breakfast. They can be stacked or put away and I could just leave the fruit bowl on the glass tabletop. Thanks for your suggestions.

I would find dark wallpaper a bit overpowering as your bench, chairs and table are all dark. A bold paper with colours similar to your paint color would be my choice. Good luck!

Separately, what if I put up a chair-rail, just in that dining area (entire living space has crown molding) and put the paper underneath and leave paint on top.

Thanks everyone! Maybe I'll keep looking

I don't think a chair rail goes with the style of the paper, chairs, or table.

It does go with the doors and molding tho...

I think it's a great idea, but I worry the scale of the print might be a little large for your small space. It works in that entry because you are only passing through or viewing from a distance. I'd want something a little less bold if I were going to be looking at it from a dining table many hours a day.

Just as a point of information and I may have misunderstood the comment from another poster, but there is no reason art cannot go on wallpaper. It does all the time and it looks fabulous.

Perhaps the comment meant the art the OP has might not hold up well against that paper- IDK about that- I just wanted to plug Wallpaper + Art = FAB

As for the question in specific, I am not keen on feature walls in general. As they say, go bold or go home ;-)

I am planning on using the same pattern (just in grey) in my (small) bathroom!

I agree with Rita. Do long and kitchen wall. Very pretty and unique. Don’t do chair rail. With the lighting I see streaming into your room, it will be beautiful!!

We just had the walls painted and I live the color, so maybe I need to leave that area alone. But I love the wallpaper- I’ve posted my entryway before, but maybe behind the cabinet (I know it’s big but I just re-did it and it’s staying for now- eventually maybe I’ll get a console table; mirror stays too).
Or, I’ll just keep my little sample square and leave my apartment alone-lol!

What a beautiful color on your walls.

    Thank you. It’s BM Smoke.

Am I crazy to consider the paper on the wall behind cabinet and mirror (may eventually get rid of cabinet and get something smaller or a console). It’s the wall you see right when you walk in front door.

I think it would look great in your dining area but only if you had a white table and chairs. The blue/green you currently have in there is beautiful. Since you love the paper and want to use it somewhere, do you have a powder room where you could enjoy it? It would look great with white fixtures.

Use the paper on both walls in your dining area. I think it's smashing.

    Go for it!

No. And where is the living space photo opposite the dining space???

Love the idea of bold. At first glance, I'd do bench wall only. Though the white doorway will separate the kitchen from the wallpaper on the door wall, it may cool the look of the whole space. Find some cheap dark fabric on clearance and tape it to the wall to get a feel for the change.

Thanks for all the comments. After reading and re-evaluating, I think I’ll live with my paint color for now. I do love it. We have a few more projects left to do in the apartment, so maybe I’ll reassess once everything is done. For now, my wallpaper sample is on the wall in my closet- behind my “jewelry” shelf so I can see it each morning :)

Ah, this makes me sad. I understand your wanting to do the short wall to appease hubby. I applaud that and if it were me, I would do it. How about using the wall paper in the bathroom. Everyone thinks that’s okay. How about using it in the back of your bookcases or any large hutches. How about using it in the kitchen, placed away from grease splatters.

Our hall bath has large tiles all over walls so no place for paper and also no windows (NYC apartment)- and I think my boys would revolt! I may use it in the back of the new bookcases we are getting built. And I also thought of using it on the painted wall as you enter my kitchen (leaving window wall painted: BM Hale Navy)-- just not sure I need to spend the $ for a whole roll just for that 6' or so. But It's an option!

Do you have a powder room? That is a great place for a bold wallpaper.

No. Only hall bath and master bathroom. Small-ish apartment in NYC.

    Here is option for you.

The adjoining space has navy/blue, gray and accents of red so the orange/khaki doesn’t mix well.
I am still considering getting a roll for this one wall in the kitchen.

    Noooo

Listen...I think you just need to admit that you love that wallpaper, and commit already :) It's not life or death, is it? It's just decorating...

No worries. I just happened upon that paper and thought it might be of interest. Go big.
Ha ha. I know, I know. But now that I’ve thought about it, I do agree it’ll be too dark in the entire dining area. Light is a luxury in NYC apartment window-less areas, so I need to keep things light and bright (it’s the one design thing my husband cared about- everything else is in my hands).
    Thanks all for indulging me!

No. Too cold and dark and dreary.

And a large pattern like that needs room to breathe and establish itself. It can't do that on a small wall with a big old door in the middle.

Why not get a brighter chandelier? You can have a dimmer for dinners....

You have lots of lovely white trim and doors to brighten things up, but I'll be happy to stop talking you into it if you like...

You'll really regret not doing this, tho :)

The chandelier is quite bright actually, abc is on dimmers. But we don’t always have that light on. And I making excuses now?!?
I think I just live my wall color more.
I just need more art in the dining space probably

It is a leap you should take. That room has plenty of light. Change bulbs to LEDs with dimmable bulbs. You will love it!

Hmmm. I love that paper. I say go for it on the one wall, or both!! Have fun with your space, yes it’s only decorating!
