The current cabinet color goes with your decor. So, I'd keep them as-is, except for the upper doors which could use some updating. Replace the uppers, whether you decide to paint or not.

I love the idea of a painted built-in cabinet instead of the baker's rack. What you have there is very cute, tho - love the boards hanging on the wall!

Do you love the oak? If you do I would change the upper doors. If you are like me and find it dated I would take out the bulkhead and blow out the kitchen. I wouldn’t paint it because you will always see the grain. Some beautiful kitchen photos on Houzz.

I would not paint the cabinets but would probably change out the hardware to a polished stainless to bring a little more pop to the kitchen. Agree the cabinets go well with your kitchen.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions! I am going to.....keep the oak! I really do like the natural wood. Our cabinets were built by an Amish local company, so I thinking about using them to built a custom cabinet for the niche. I want a beverage station, perhaps with a small sink. The opening is only 51” and I must house a microwave also. I thought a dark glossy gray would go nicely. I welcome comments or suggestions!

We think perhaps changing the backsplash, or just taking the current one out and painting behind the countertops instead would be a nice update. We also think your cabinets look really nice, the only think we might alter are the few cabinet doors with arches. Perhaps look into replacing those doors?
