Question regarding wood flooring in kitchens

I'm a big fan of programs "DIY, Income Property, Property Brothers' etc. where i see that flooring in kitchen as part of the open concept design which is very popular as opposed to porcelain/ceramic tiles. Anyone share my concerns regarding spills, water overflow?

When my parents renovated their kitchen about 10 years ago they changed out their old saltillo tiles for wood floors. They have been EXTREMELY happy with their durability (no more fear of cracking tiles when you drop dishes!!) Also, with the addition of Grandkids and pets, those floors have seen just about everything. I am no professional, but I would be concerned about water buckling and warping if the floor was not sealed well or if a major flood happened. We have spilled pots full of water, glasses of wine, etc and it is still holding up well. I cannot speak for engineered wood floors though. Hope this helps!

We have hard wood flooring in our kitchen and love it. It was here when we moved in 20 years ago. We are moving next week and one of the first projects is to install wood flooring.

We remodeled our kitchen in 2000. We completely gutted it and went with hardwood as the rest of the house was hardwood (except for baths). We have been extremely happy with it. It's easier on the legs when standing. Dropped dishes have not broken. We had no flooding or water issues.

That's good to know. Thanks. We're moving into a new build, and we asked for wood floor throughout ( builder is installing tile) . Builder is charging too much money for small square footage. We even suggested that he not install tiles (even though they are nice) and we would place wood floor ourselves. They refused; said house had to be completed per specs.

The loan is based on the specs.... can you try and change the specs?

If you get your way - a good quality engineered floor is fine in the kitchen. It is what is in my kitchen. We glue the joints together in the kitchen for extra protection from water.

We changed our kitchen floors to hard wood 4 years ago. In order for them to match the existing floors, we had the older wood sanded and stained along with the new floor. I was unaware that the sealants aren't what they used to be and I can no longer use a wet mop to clean. I do not feel that the Bona Spray and what is basically a dust mop clean the floors at all, at least not in my kitchen, with 3 children. Honestly, I would not put hardwood in my kitchen if I could do it over!

I work in a home improvement store and have a lot of people ask the exact same thing, there are certain hard wood floor types that are acceptable for any areas that may get spills or moisture and there are some that aren't. So you'll just have to enquire about which is recommended when you're ready to start your project :)
