Antique shelf question

Does anyone know why the top shelf of this cabinet has a round cut-out?

So you can put something taller there? It's kind of prime viewing position so a large vase or similar would draw the eye there.

Thanks Colleenoz, I had the same thought! Very curious!

Although I can't be certain that yours is a corner cupboard, back in the day the C- shaped upper shelf was not uncommon in a corner cupboard. It held your stemware, wine glasses, rather fragile, quite expensive, and very showy.

If you had a set, you wanted everyone to know it.

The shelf held the complete set in a single row of glasses, making it impressively visible. Equally important, or perhaps more so, it made it much less likely that you (or the house maids) would break one or two while getting them out to set the table.

cgard2 - Thank you, that does make sense! I appreciate you taking the time to give me this information!

I think you've found the perfect location for this piece of furniture.

Unusual for me, I reported the comment which then made it invisible to me. I was hoping it made it invisible to others especially the OP but with the last comment apparently not if HUXXX could see it. Lawrence @@@@@

Well said, HU, well and truly said. I saw that comment when it was just a few hours old and was going to express the same thought but couldn't come up with a polite enough response to actually hit the Submit button. Thank you.

Most internet forums have "DBAD" as a guideline. Houzz could use it. :/

Or maybe he meant "It's awesome that you have this in your garage to get it totally rehabilitated"? I have to confess, it would be in my garage getting a new interior paint color because that pink simply won't go with my stuff. It's a great piece, and practical.

I just thought it looked nice with the pink bike hanging from the ceiling. Now that I study the picture more closely, that Budweiser sign on the wall behind the bike makes me think a few of these glasses would look great on the shelves.

Fori - funny that you say that about the pink color - that's exactly our plan - just have to what for the temperature to rise in Ohio to paint it!

Sorry, I was wrong. The neighbors called and said that the garage was not the perfect place for this piece of furniture.

They can get their own garage and furniture!
