Oh I think so, they root seems to be exposing too much off the ground.

It also looks like something gnawed on the graft.

for many of us.. that is properly planted ... graft above ground ...

yeah.. i thinks its dead ... but it is still winter.. you might want to give it some time ....

but.. to be sure.. anything below that knob.. will be the plant associated with the roots.. and those are usually not worth the space they will take up ...

if you made that injury below the graft.. you are way beyond a scratch test ... besides.. you dont really care if it was alive below ...

that is not a root below the graft.. so i would tend not to bury it ... but i think other do..

if space is at a premium.. i would probably be done with it.. rather than wasting a few months hoping and praying it might come back ... life's to short ....ours.. not the roses .. lol ..

ps: i doubt the coffee grounds had anything to do with this.. but i would put soil amendments a little further away from a plant ... perhaps at the canopy edge .... where peeps suggest the feeder roots usually are ... [any plant.. not a rose rule per se...]

Have any of your other roses started to bud out yet? If not I'd wait and see what it does when the weather really warms up. It's still winter and too soon to pronounce anything dead yet.

Yes many of my roses are all green and starting to buds except for those two
