Very interesting article and beautiful pictures. The west coast of Norway has a temperate maritime climate. So in spite of being on the 60th parallel it is far warmer than farther inland or on the same latitude as Alaska. The sea never freezes and snow melts at once. It's dark in winter and summers are cool but so are mine on the 59th parallel but my climate is much harsher because of colder winters. I grow El Ariana, a Geschwind rose from before 1910 that was thought to be lost but it has survived since 1915 in the coastal city of Bergen, near these islands. They are not in northern Norway but rather in the southern half of the country. Even the far north is warmer than most of Sweden because of the Gulf Stream.

I couldn't get the page to open for me but it sounds like a true testament to the survival instinct of roses.

Thanks for posting the link to this beautiful photo gallery. I have ancestors from Norway, and while I have never visited there, it feels like a special place for me.

I wonder what the rose looks like in bloom... summer solstice is a great time for roses.

The sheep are so sweet looking and fluffy, like soft cotton balls.
