Morning all! How's everyone doing today? We're in day two of our heat wave, supposed to end on Sunday. You all on the eastern seaboard are really getting hammered! And with the humidity - well, let's just say I feel sorry for ya!

The "Devil with the Blue Dress On" was both the scariest and funniest costume. I scared the heck out of people just by being the devil....but i thought I looked hysterical! I actually had a devil bald cap type of thing....so there was no hair, just red bald cap with horns and then I painted my face and make-up accordingly to match the head piece. Electric blue sweater dress on with red suede boots. People were giving me things all night long as gifts to stay the helz away from them. ha! Cars braked hard when they saw me.
It was a very interesting reaction as far as any costume I've ever worn.

    Hi judyg :)
Good to see you!! Miss you too!

omg judy.....all i've thought about today is death..and children dying before parents...etc.
she sounds like a brave woman to me. my mom planted a birch tree for my sis on her side yard...planted some low shrubs and bulbs and perennials beneath it and there is a bench and a windchime that all of us other girls gave to her. She loves that spot. :)

MP, no i hope it's not my forever home. love the house but it's in the burbs. translate :families. dull for a single gal. my goal is to find an artsy, cool beach town. a place where creative people congregate. a place where people argue politics and world affairs with no hurt feelings.
it'll be awhile til i can swing it.

drove 20+ miles to buy a sofa today. wasn't looking but it was advertised on CL and look like a perfect replacement for my GR sofa. didn't buy it. pictures can be decieving. oh well. the seller was interesting and had some good stories to tell before the next potential buyer showed up.
well i'm glad the seller was entertaining at least!! :)
ok, when you find the beach town that fits that bill, lemme know. I may be living with you before it's all over with!
Mo, you should check out Santa Cruz, CA. It sounds just like the town you're looking for! A wonderful beach, boardwalk and very artsy. Not too expensive, considering it's in California. Houzz has written 5 ideabooks about Santa Cruz, here ya go! http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/query/santa-cruz
  • 13 years ago
MP! You remember Santa Cruz, don't you?

EZ, that was me! But I should have said bored AND broke! I'm hoping to tile my kitchen countertops soon, tho, so that will occupy quite a bit of time I would think. I have a truly weird shaped kitchen so it will also be a challenge!

    Something I said???

    What shape is your kitchen?
I have two 'L's in my kitchen. One L has the sink and cooktop, the other one is the peninsula and a side piece. It's weird, hard to describe. Big kitchen, tho, I think the biggest I've ever had!
How many running feet of countertops do you need to tile, you don't need to give me the square footage, I remember you and STK talking about figuring out all your weird little measurements a couple weeks ago.
Running feet??? I have no clue! Actually I think one half of one L is six feet, then it's turn is three feet. But the other side I have no idea!!!
    Roo! Here's a color challenge for ya, she's looking for a third off-white: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/paint-color-dsvw-vd~565188
  • 13 years ago
Don't be scared Bobbi, I'm not asking you to run your own feet while I chase you round the kitchen, lol.
Just trying to picture it in my mind.
So what else is in your revere pewter and brand new VP living room? What color are your furnishings? What kind of art do you have on the walls.
My enquiring mind wants to know :)
All I know is shower pan and VP and painted rocks.

You don't scare me Michele! hehehe Our sofa and love seat are blah beige microfiber but won't be replaced any time soon! My hubby is an amateur photographer so our walls are (tastefully, natch) filled with his photos. Some photos of the pyramids in Mexico City, and some close-ups of the flowers we had last year. Basically the LR has no color and the kitchen is loaded with color!
Pillows Bobbi, pillows. Is it a long one story desert house? Do you have a lawn? Or is it garden and dry landscape?
That's what I was thinking. Add color to the living room with pillows. If you get bored or the season changes, change the pillows. And Make your husband take some colorful pics for the living room and get them blown up inexpensively on cardbaord canvas at Walmart.
You know the app I told you about handy? There's all sorts of cool effects for photos, lots of fun. Not just the painting, sketching or charcoal effects.
Now Bobbi is scared of me, lol. Too many questions. :)
    charleee thanked mefor

We have pillows! I made them myself, they're black and white, hehehe. The pics he took are matted and framed in chrome frames, they look good. We matted them ourselves. I have some pics somewhere, I'll have to look around. Why are we working on my living room? It's not going to change til Christmas!!!
Hey, did the typeface just change on our names? Bolder?
    Que the Twilight Zone music!
I like it! Didn't anyone else notice?
Michele, it's a typical California ranch, large but not huge front and backyards. Covered patio in the back. Lawn in front is good, lawn in back isn't!
bobbi, are you feeling the love over on what color should I paint the backsplash, lol?
@handy...Never do my Halloween costume at work...Most of my work was in critical care...and no one in there needed any scaring!! LOL
  • 13 years ago
Well that's for sure Jayme! :) Unless you came in something very sweet and pleasant. :)

Reserved a camp site for Fri and Sat. night at a lake....
-Daughter & granddaughter r here, and we ordered out pizza..it's so dang hot and humid !
-Ex got a 65% chance for recovery. This, I am skeptical of, as they r not done testing yet and do not have back results..IE: tomorrow, he gets a bone marrow biopsy.. I didn't tell anyone else what I thought in re: How can they give him any numbers when they are not even done testing. Just hoping for the best!!
Ooh, that's why I couldn't get in, they were doing a little maintenance and enhancements.i like the way it looks. I don't want to work on your living room unless you asked. I was just curious about you and your house so I thought I'd just ask. How'd you like that Boos butcher block? I liked the floors in that home goods store, very funky, must be a newer store. I'm still in state college, picked up the man boy and staying at hotel tonight, leaving at dawn tomorrow. Went to home goods to check out the merchandise, nice store here and nobody was in it!! And it was super neat, had a ball and bought some stuff for beach house. Dirt cheap, my favorite price.
Sitting in room on couch, in robe with feet up,stack of home mags and catalogs in lap and a pot of awesome melange mint green tea in front of me. With houzz at my fingertips. And the ac is blasting, aaaaaaaahhhhhh
    happy :)
Bet that ac is making your son happy by now! Did he like the architecture camp?
He's lounged out and loving that ac. He had a great time and really enjoyed himself. Likes the school and the program a lot. Of course he loved Pratt and in a few weeks we'll go to cooper union and he will love that too. I'm sure he'll narrow it down soon. Ish. I hope. :)
Geez, I'm looking at him now and I'm sure he grew another inch, STOP!!!!! What happened to the little man?
It is a sad day when you look up and discover he is taller than you. Sadder for my husband as he is taller than him too, lol!

That is the problem with seeing different schools, it becomes an influence--what it looks like etc, as opposed to the programs they offer.
He's more impressed with the aspects of purely design school vs traditional college experience kind of school. Either way, I'm pretty happy because the schools are all sort of top ten undergrad arch programs and most are top ten grad too. And I'm glad that they're on the east coast, but don't tell him that!!! Shhhhhh ;)
Here's some pics with that app, first one is the real photo
  • 13 years ago
That is very cool, I would probably spend way too much time playing with that.

I could use a little of that AC this week. Hot and humid and I've got porch steps to finish tomorrow. Previous owners had sat the porch stringers straight onto the dirt so of course they were totally rotted. Plus the two posts holding up the porch were sitting on concrete pads but still covered in dirt and totally rotting. The bottom tread was so rotted that it had a weed growing in the dirt accumulated in the rotted spot at one end.

I'll admit that we didn't fix the porch totally "right" but it is certainly a great improvement. We jacked up the porch almost two inches and replaced the posts with pressure treated lumber. My partner wanted to just trace the old stringers but I nixed that idea because they weren't really right to start with as it didn't account for either tread depth or porch flooring so the top rise was shorter than the bottom 3 risers. So, I measured the overall height, figured the riser height and the tread depth and cut a new stringer. He ended up deciding to help somewhere around that point, so I got him to cut the other stringers after I drew them out. He's had lots more practice so his cuts are straighter than mine, but I can see how to draw the pieces. Plus, we added another stringer as I thought a 6 foot wide stair needed more than 3 stringers. Hopefully we'll get the stairs finished and the porch base enclosed tomorrow morning as the heat index is supposed to be 105-108 by tomorrow afternoon.

Trying to fix a house for resale is a really tough business because I want to fix the existing issues but I need to get the project done too. My partner isn't much help because he also wants to do things right but then likes to try to claim that all the scope creep was only my fault even though he was there all along saying that needs fixed, that isn't right etc. One line he uses is (polite paraphrase here...) Don't bake a beautiful birthday cake and then not frost it carefully. I would actually prefer that he state a true opinion instead of choosing to agree during decision making time and then suddenly start telling me why I shouldn't have done it that way only after things start to go pear shaped. He has a very poor memory for everything except my mistakes. Grrr...men, you can't work with 'em and you can't shoot em either! Maybe I could move to Florida???

Bobbi - Been there, done that! I moved to Southern Cal (lived in Fullerton, worked in City of Commerce) immediately after graduating from college. Best thing about California was meeting my husband, second best thing was leaving! I'm a country girl at heart and I like old houses, historic preservation, open spaces etc--not too much of that in Orange County, the land of strip malls and tract housing.

G'day all, another typical day here started off beautiful and really hot so I did a nice heap of washing, got it all on the line and I swear the clouds deliberately hide over the hill so the minute I do this they swoop over the hill and dump.

mp - when you come back, that is so lovely your idea to send the photos to your ex's mum, but maybe ask her first if she might like them - just to be on the safe side.

A neighbour of mine lost her son to bipolar some years back. He was a gorgeous kid but despite being on meds he couldn't handle what the bipolar was doing to him, he even went as far as bashing his father, so he took his life. At the time the parents insisted they were at peace with his decision as they were worried about him when they were no longer around, they were happy that he was finally at peace with himself, even had a big celebration for his passing but over the years the mother has sunk lower and lower, finding solace in alcohol to the point that there is very little anyone can do for her now. If you can, try to stay in touch with your ex's mother to ensure she is as ok as she says - it is very easy for people to talk big at times like this.
