Totally agree with LK on this. I would want a professional to figure it out for me. A PT would know best.

Yes to the above

I am a Certified Aging in Place Specialist. The NAHB maintains an online database of all CAPS individuals. They range from OT’s and PT’s, to builders, real estate pros, architects, interior designers and others. I specialize in kitchen and bath design specifically because they are both the most used and the most restrictive of use in a home. I have family issues with mobility issues, and that personal involvement with their struggles are what prompted me to gain certification. Most other CAPS people have similar personal involvements as well. https://www.nahb.org/en/find/directory-designee.aspx#sort=%40flastname44362%20ascending

I have concerns that since you are asking now, perhaps not all was done during the home design phase itself to maximize accessibly. Making changes after framing creates issues and incurs cost just like a remodel would do. Please find a certified individual to help you ASAP. You need someone experienced in reading blueprints, and who understands the siting issues effect on home elevation on the property.

Accessibility starts at the edge of the property and goes the whole way through. Good luck, and please keep us updated on your project!

My husband uses a wheelchair outside the house. He will likely need it inside the house in the next few years. Right now he uses the bathtub, as he prefers it, but we built so he could also use the shower. It’s zero entry and big enough for a wheelchair.

The handles for the shower are right inside the door and handy to the shower seat.

Sprays should never spray towards the entry of a shower unless the whole room is done as a wetroom. The bench should go opposite the sprays, with a separate handheld located there. Make sure that it’s large enough space to transfer to the bench with a helper if needed. Often a mobile bench is more versatile for that reason. It doesn’t take up space permanently. Just when you need it.

We use it and it works for us. The water stays inside and it can be used without issue for both of us. If he cannot transfer to the bench, he will be in a chair he can take a shower in. We aim for accessibility and unless you are disabled you can only guess what will be acceptable. What works for one may not be perfect for someone else.
