Most scanner software gives a choice of file format for saving each scan. It's not automatically one thing or another, it's a setting.

What is/was your intent for the scrapbook scans?

My intentions are to load them to a flashdrive. I hadn't decided whether I wanted to crop them to individual pictures but wanted to start out saving them in the same view that they are in the scrap books. I'm using the program that comes with the scanner. It didn't give me the option of file format unless it is in the default settings. I thought it would give me that option to save after it was scanned. I tried figuring it out from the online manual but couldn't. Thought someone might have some experience with this.

On the Cannon website their is a community forum for printers. HP I pick if I want to scan as a document or photo. Pretty bad if the manual doesn't tell you how to scan in the various formats. I found this if it's in the model line you have. Mary

I have a Canon LiDE700 which has four function buttons. One is specific for PDFs. "Scan" saves as a .jpg. "E-Mail" saves as a .jpg of smaller size & resolution for an e-mail attachment. "Copy" scans & prints.

I have Paint Shop Pro (slightly older version than is current) which interfaces directly to the scanner to scan/import, then the resultant image can be edited if desired, and saved as any graphics format that PSP supports. The function in my version is under File / Import / TWAIN / Acquire. Can also add a scan button to the toolbar (which icon looks like a hand-held scanner). Other graphics editors may also directly support a scanner.

(TWAIN is an acronym for [really!] Technology Without An Interesting Name, which is a standard for communication between computer software and image input hardware such as scanners.)

I have Adobe Acrobat Pro (not free, different than Adobe Reader) which can convert/save a .pdf to many other formats including .jpg.

Reader DC can't do that, it can only convert to Word, Excel, and Powerpoint (and maybe those only if the respective programs are also installed), and to a text file (.txt) or a Rich Text file (.rtf) ... not any images-type files.

Since you seem to have some graphics editing experience, perhaps view the .pdf in Reader, do a screen capture of it, and crop/save the individual photos to .jpgs.

My question was not where you intended to put the scans but rather what you wanted to do with them. If it was to have individual photos to print or do other things, with, you should have scanned them individually.

acrafty lady, you're talking about the scan quality settings, not the file format. A scan is a scan, there's no user-settable format to it, only the quality by setting color vs b/w and dpi (pixel density). The format relates to what file type the scan is converted to for saving.

In a scan program the format choice is usually a dropdown when the folder appears or is given with the option to "Save as...."
