How to update this fireplace?

Knee-deep in a full-house remodel, and have a major case of decision fatigue. At a loss of what to do with this fireplace in the living room!

The living room is 13.5' x 20', with a large opening into foyer, and a doorway to the dining room. Carpeted floors will be replaced with hickory hardwood. Wall color is light gray.

Currently, the fireplace is tiled with 12" square tiles, which are almost all cracked and are begging to be replaced. We're thinking of reducing the size of the tiled area - it is now 7 feet across by 4.25 feet tall...maybe would like it to be 5 feet across instead? Not sure if that would look out of scale with the room.

Also thought about taking the tile up the ceiling; our ceilings are 8', would that look weird?

We also really like the idea of a single slab of...something. Medium or dark gray in color, with some lighter veins or movement. But our budget is already stretched to the max, so would like to keep this update on the $ and not $$$ side.
