Am I crazy or does it exist?

My hubby and I remember seeing a Kitchen Aid, 5 door, counter depth refrigerator at one of the appliance stores we were shopping at.

Now we can not find it anywhere online. I believe it was JUST under 23 cu.ft.

Thank you Lizbeth. The one I'm talking about is just like this, however counter depth (wood drawers, and blue LED lights).

That style hasn't ever been counter depth - KitchenAid's parent brand Whirlpool has the same style and it's only full depth as well:

    https://www.whirlpool.com/kitchen/refrigeration/refrigerators/french-door/p.26-cu.-ft.-double-drawer-refrigerator-with-dual-icemakers.wrv986fdem.html

The 5 door design (drawers specifically) cut down on available interior space while still being a deep unit, so my guess is going counter depth puts them at a noticeable difference in cubic footage compared to other counter depth brands and models. Long story short, no, what you're looking for unfortunately does not exist in a 5 door/drawer combination.

diggity - Thank you for the detailed info. My husband actually called the store where we BELIEVED we had seen the unit, and you are correct. The counter depth one is a three door not a five! Funny, everything eventually muddles into one and crosses over when you are redoing a kitchen and have looked at everything there is out there! Thank you again.

FWIW, I got the KA French Door model which is 72" instead of the more standard 69. I don't know if the 3" adds appreciably to the interior dimensions but I will say that the counter depth actually gives me more functional space since I used to lose lots of things to the black holes of Calcutta in the back of the deeper refrigerators. The configuration with the wide storage for "deli" type items is fairly functional as well.

Thank you Helen...can you share with me the model number of your unit, as well as how you like it so far (and how long you've had it)?

I bake/cook a LOT and I find that our current fridge (older two door Kenmore Elite) doesn't really hold as much as it looks like it would.

I'm seriously considering the KA counter depth model, although my husband fears it may be too small.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

This is the KA refrigerator I got - it is actually identical to the Jennair but is about $200 or $300 less. I actually inspect the KA and the JA side by side with a sales person and we were hard pressed to find any differences. They are sister companies.

    Kitchenaid Refrigerator

Choosing my refrigerator was the most difficult decision in terms of selecting appliances for my remodel. The other appliances were fairly easy because I could narrow down the choices in terms of features that I wanted and so I basically was left with only one choice.

With refrigerators, it was all over the place but I was working within certain parameters - it couldn't be wider than 36"; wanted counter depth because I didn't want a hulking presence in my kitchen; I didn't want through the door water - in fact I didn't actually want a water dispenser at all - FWIW, a water dispenser eats up a lot of usable interior space. That narrowed down my options somewhat and I focused on brands that seemed to be more highly rated.

I then paid a visit (or several visits) to good appliance stores that actually stocked the models I was interested in. It then came down to the KA because I liked the higher height which made it look more built in and I also decided that I wanted a panel refrigerator because I didn't want stainless steel in my kitchen since I got a copper sink and I preferred that the stainless not stand out in my relatively small kitchen.

I have only been using it for about four months but so far I like it. Obviously any counter depth refrigerator has a bit less interior space than a regular model but the interior is well laid out and so far it hasn't been an issue - of course I am not feeding vast hordes of people but I would imagine that people with large families would have room for an auxiliary refrigerator or freezer in the garage or basement - most of my friends with families have a secondary refrigerator. I would say the interior is ample for two people with normal shopping habits.

However, you really need to actually peer into refrigerator interiors in person as otherwise it's really impossible to decide which one you like the most.

Thank you for the info. on your KA refrigerator. It helps to hear the details. The KA we are considering is: KAKRFC704FSS
I believe the one that you have is a different model. I was reading the reviews on yours and beside being GORGEOUS, the reviews on it are very good, which actually makes the decision even harder for us since now we are adding another option to our list! :)

Did you order the white, since I know you said you didn't want SS?

I'm ENVIOUS of your copper sink! Hubby and I were considering the purchase of one, but the price tag (and fearing it may not patina well) was a a deterrent.

    Thank you again!

I have an older version of that same KA fridge that Helen has. It's about 6 years old, and it's very practical and nice looking. The doors hold A LOT of stuff! and the interior of the body is very spacious as well. We did not opt for the water dispenser. I'd definitely recommend it.

I ordered the paneled model which means that it has the same wood doors as my cabinets so it blends in with the rest of the cabinetry. My cabinet maker also made custom side panels for the part that extends past the counter so it has a more integrated look in that the sides don't stick out like sore thumbs.

My copper sink was a splurge but the good copper sinks don't have issues with patinas because they don't have fake factory applied patinas which can wear off. My sink has a natural living patina - it mostly resembles an old copper penny but if I happen to leave something acidic in a spot, that spot becomes shiny but then gets a patina again - that's why it's called a "living finish" - I love mine.

I have a copper sink in my guest bath which does have a factory "fake" patina but I am not worried about that finish because if it gets used once a day by someone washing their hands, that's a lot :-).

Your model has different features which would make it easy for you to decide between the two.

It has the exterior water dispenser which I didn't want but some people find it indispensable. I don't drink water from my tap - even filtered - so that was a non-starter for me. FWIW, I do have the ice maker and both the water dispenser and ice maker have water lines which can burst and cause leaks. Because of this I installed a water alarm system and a pan. If water is detected in the pan, the water automatically shuts off and thus there is no flooding.

My unit has split shelving which you may or may not like. I do like the ability to stagger my shelves independently.

Your unit has some kind of wide prep shelf which may or may not be functional for you.

My unit has an insert which theoretically can hold wine bottles in the correct position which may or may not be useful to you. My lifestyle isn't such that I need multiple bottles of wine chilling so I haven't used it or installed it.

Your unit is about $1000 more than mine so I am not sure what features your model has. Again, I would suggest checking both units out in person to determine which model you like better.
