Here's one growing in your zone that belongs to my son in Thousand Oaks, CA. He whacks on it all the time so they can get around it.

These photos make me wish I grew this rose. Just magnificent.

I think my son needs to feed his. The blooms look sparse and small and pale compared to these others. He may be afraid it'll get bigger.

Jeri, was yours freestanding or was there a tree somewhere in there?

There was an arbor under there, But the rose grew more or less freestanding, with the support of the fence, and turned itself into that gigantic "mushroom"

Looking back on it, we should never have removed that rose. Nothing else has ever done that well ... though we have put a Secret Garden Musk Climber there, now, and it's seeming very happy.

Jeri, I should be fortunate enough to grow a mushroom such as yours! To me, the form looks like a multi trunk crepe myrtle or maybe a redbud, only better.
