Should I keep these sofas?

I am so confused. Should I keep these sofas? They just arrived and they feel too big and in combination with the rug too old fashioned? Just refinished the floors and painted and am trying to furnish the living and the dining rooms. I would like to do leather or performance fabric (no microfiber) as I have a large dog and teenagers. The rug is an old Moroccan rug and I would like to utilize it either in the living or the dining room. My style is traditional and classic but I don’t want it to look “heavy”. What do you think?

The dining room table is in theprocess and I am also planning to add window treatments and paintings.

They are squashy big brown sofas, a very popular choice for family rooms with dogs and teenagers. If you want something less substantial-looking, take another look around before sending these back.

Perhaps you could keep the sofa and send the loveseat back? That would give you the option to choose more modern chairs to finish the space.

junco East Georgia zone 8a Thank you! I was thinking the same about potentially replacing the love seat to create a more streamlined look but am struggling to picture what could go in place of the love seat. I need seating and comfort and my dog uses the window spot as an observation point (I can't believe he is part of the process but he looks through the window for hours each day).

HU-538414805 Thank you. Is it OK if the rug is under the sofa and I have 1/2 of the living room with the bare floor? The room is on a long side and this is not a small rug.

Perhaps a bench under the window for the dog, and then two chairs facing the sofa. Will you have a TV in this room?

I'd be curious to see how these sofas look with a different rug. You mentioned moving this rug in the dining room. Have you tried that? i.e. do the proportions fit with the room (and the table size that you expect to buy). Maybe moving the rug out will help you see the sofas with fresh eyes and you can look at rugs online and try to imagine how they'd look in that room.

FWIW, it seems a shame that the loveseat is blocking part of the window. Maybe junco is right, to consider returning the love seat in favor of two chairs. Prior to doing that, I'd consider the room layout. It's a pretty room, but it has a lot of entrances, so it's not obvious (to me) where to put the furniture.

junco East Georgia zone 8a For now no TV in this room but potentially I would replace the piano with TV (sad but my kids don't play anymore). Do the chairs have to be leather or could be upholstered? I am thinking if I replace the love seat, I would add chairs but they have to be usable, not just for display:)

girl_wonder Thank you. Yes, another option is to move the rug to the dining room and add a simple sisal or jute rug. I think that adding a simple rug to the living room would modernize it a bit. The room and the entire house (split level) have challenges with the design. I feel like nothing really flows properly. You are right this room has stairs upstairs (bedrooms) and downstairs (entrance) as well as the opening to the dining room and the kitchen.

Have you tried flipping the couch & loveseat, so the couch is on the long side of the rug?

following as I am on the hunt for an area for the new build here.

So I decided to return the current sofas and am back to square one. The dogs and the teenagers are still around and are not returnable. What do you think about this sectional? My husband liked it but I am not 100% settled. He really likes leather because it's more durable and I prefer the fabric (no microfiber) because it's more comfortable. I also can't wait 12 weeks for the sofa to be made as we need a place to sit. Let me know your thoughts. This is from Raymour and Flanigan and is mid range pricing.

I also looked at the leather sectional from Bassett which was double the price from Raymour plus a 30 day wait. It could be chosen in different leather colors. It was super comfortable in the store but who knows how it would feel once they make it. This is the Bassett option.

Will the decimation always block your window even more? What about a 3 seater (lounger/chaise) and then 2 chairs by the window? Such nice light and a view. You could put s bench or “dog bed” by the window but it allows people to walk and stand there too. Creates an intimate conversation area but could still view TV if you replace piano.
Thank you, interesting. I think the issue with the chairs, they are a bit less comfortable for actual sitting. Maybe club chairs? But then they will block the window as well. The dog is 90 pounds. I need to look for the dog benches for large dogs. He sits next to the window most of the day.

What about navy blue sofas instead of brown? Would that look better with the colors in that rug? Navy blue is quite neutral.

My dogs have their own sofa. They got the old sofa when we got a new one. They have not complained.

I think something sleeker would look better with a bigger rug

actually I like your rug. what if you flipped the sofas to face the wall if you are going to have a TV in here?
Thank you! I thought about turning everything towards the big wall but it will cut the room in half and then I have the niche with the piano which will be in the back. The berkey sofa you sent, I actually have it in my son’s room. It’s small but great. I have leather sofa’s overload... I hear you about sleeker. How do I find something sleeker that 4 people and an 90 pound dog can all fit in.

Sofas and two chairs in a smaller scale for this room and confine the rug to the dining room. Select a sofa that is not too light or dark and maybe consider recliners in the sofa. That is always a winning combination.

    Update: Sofa's Returned.

What do you think about these sectionals? Tried them today. Comfortable. The teal color is interesting and seems a bit more modern, just not sure about the combination with the rug. Perhaps the rug would move to the dining room. Could fit 4 adults and a dog.

I absolutely LOVE that teal sectional....

What a stunner. (As long as it's not a baby blue-ish teal)

Can you tape the dimensions out on the floor and show us? Painters tape will come right off the rug with no problems...

Love the rug hate the sofas. Go shopping fo a sofa in a color there really 100s of colors of leather and brown is IMO not one of them I would look at navy leather with that fab rug and please get good lether it is worth every penny. Get a sofa and 2 chairs a much better choice or 2 sofas but never a loveseat.

Just wanted to post an update. Returned the leather and ended up with this sectional from room and board. It has sturdy fabric, comfortable and is a bit more modern and really fits our needs of fitting 4 people and the dog so we can all hang out at end of the day. Now to the coffee table, the lamps and the window treatments. Let me know please if the rug placement is off or any other ideas on how to complete this room. Still debating if the rug should move to the dining room. So thankful for this forum.

Dining room. We had table and chairs made from scratch. Love the table, not yet set on the chairs

I would like the rug better under the dining room set. I would go with some blues and grays for the living room rug.

To my eye, the middle red area is a bit intense, and I like the patterned border very much. Under the table, the border will be what shows more and the red will be a bit tucked away.

If not, then rotate the rug so the long way of the rug is under the long way of the sofa.

Partim, I really like the idea. I will try to put the rug in the dining room and see how it works there.

Red is a classic color in a dining room to stimulate appetite and conversation.

I love your dining set. The chair shape reminds me of mine - are the chairs very comfortable? Mine are.
