Hi Kathy, without changing any of your existing layout, my suggestion would be to reduce your internal pantry shelves to 250mm deep, along the full length and far corner. Have 150 mm shelves on fridge end. This will give you full accessible shelving. Take a look at your pantry items, are any of the containers more than 250 square or long? There is really no need for 600mm deep shelving, in this space

Hi Dreamer, it’s a great idea but I’m not sure about being able to walk in properly towards the left side - it’s 600 deep it appears so will leave 350 access? Is that enough???

Yes Kathy, your pantry is only 650mm wide. So with 250mm would leave only 400mm to shuffle into. It is an awkward space. But, as drawn it is unusable. Maybe that's why they have drAwn in 600mm deep shelves, knowing that the space is inaccessible, at the back. I will leave for someone else to rearrange your kitchen.

hi dreamer, are your walls fixed? I assume you want a sliding door? Can you push the 350 shelves back into the laundry?

i also think the 1800 distance to island is too far. 1200 is better. I’d bring the island in and make it deeper, prob narrow it to 1300 to give more fridge clearance

Would you consider the sink in the island? That would then free up that space for pantry shelves.

Thanks Kate & Bigreader but I can’t change anything in the kitchen it’s a new house where the architect stuffed up basically and I’m so over this pantry problem. My only fix is to try and amend the pantry only- I can’t redesign the kitchen unfortunately. Thanks for the ideas though. Really appreciate your ideas.

Hi Kathy, can you seal off the lhs completely and create a door from your laundry into a new ‘stores cupboard’ for unopened groceries and less often used items? Not ideal I know, but maybe less annoying that the current configuration

Hi Kathy, I had the same arrangement in a previous house. It actually worked fine, fitted with far shallower shelves as other posters have suggested. Lots of them, none deeper than a cereal box and all adjustable. Definitely more of a lean-in pantry than a work zone but actually quite an efficient storage area without wasting floor space. Just have to make sure no one stores any stuff on the floor or you need long arms!

And it needs good lighting.

And only shelving on the two walls as drawn.

Ok. What about ditching the sliding door altogether? Really it’s not much of a separate pantry anyway. Then extend the overheads and base cupboards right around the space. Get drawers in the base cupboards. And extend the narrow overheads down to bench height. Not perfect but removes the awkward reach in.

I had one of these in another house it worked beautifully having narrow "L" shape shelves which allowed you to easily reach things, only difference was that mine had a left side hinge door, your sliding is perfect being next to the wall ovens, deep shelves are annoying

Only thing I would like to see is the island changed to 900 wide and approx 1600 long parallel to the sink, the kitchen would work so much better

I think I may go with the narrow shelf idea as I can’t redo any other part of the kitchen- this is a newish home that was designed by an architect -who obviously is a minimalist lol. Thanks for your input and ideas.

looks like the pantry that I have. It just has the narrower shelves as mentioned by others. It actually works well as nothing gets lost at the back.

Kathy does the finished flooring go under the Island as it would be easy to re arrange the island, I love a minimalist look

No the flooring is not under the island. Jan I thought of getting in from the laundry but I then lose cupboard space in the laundry. Again my minimalist architect :(

Is it possible to add more flooring, matching it?, I don't see the pantry being the problem for me it's the island, too much distance between benches

Perhaps get rid of shelves and have a system that swings out of the cupboard into the kitchen.
