Front door opens to a wall - Dilemma

Hi all,


First time posting here and wanted to see if anyone has any good ideas!

We just bought a larger mid-century one story home in Texas. Our front door opens directly into a beautiful Texas limestone brick wall and therefore the entryway is separated from the main living room. We are doing an extensive remodel of the home including tearing down a bunch of walls and making a large great room. Our dilemma is this:


If we take down this specific wall (which is also the chimney/weight bearing - see pics below) we would have to modify the front of the house (doable but pricy). If we keep the wall, it will add an accent to the living room but then our guests who enter our house will open the door into a wall.


There is a height discrepancy between the living room and the foyer right now and this was a post-construction remodel... we will probably open up the ceiling and extend to the original height and re-open the skylights that were capped.


Another benefit of the wall is obviously privacy and a barrier between the great room and the doorway... Attached are a couple of pics.


Benefits of not having the wall are creating a tremendously large space from the front door to the great room which would visually be very striking.

    I would keep the wall/chimney.

    It's better feng shui actually... :-)


    I know it's popular these days to tear all the walls down and make large open concept rooms.

    However, I think having the wall creates a bit of privacy and mystery. Why do you want to see your entire space the moment you open the front door? The foyer doesn't look too narrow. Keeping the wall will save money and provide you more opportunities for decorating.
