Augusta Luise rose

Augusta Luise rose (TANgust/Fox-Trot/Hayley Westenra/Rachel), bred by Hans Jürgen Eversin (Germany, 1998) and released in Germany in 1999. The 6-inch blooms are in peach and light yellow and age to salmon-pink with strong, fruity, sweet fragrance. The blooms have ruffed edges and have up to 50 petals. This rose is very healthy in my garden.

I just got this rose bare root last November from Palatine Roses and these are the first few blooms. I have been waiting a few years for this rose to be available from Palatine Roses again (I think this is the only place for US gardeners to order this rose) and it’s worth the wait. The first few blooms are already are beautiful so I can’t wait when this rose shows its full potential. Helen

    WOW! =) Helen,

What a gorgeous rose. I also ordered this one from Palatine last year and just planted it here mid March. Your blooms are sooo beautiful. I am so glad Diane showed this beauty around here before, because I had never seen her and she certainly is a gorgeous rose. Would you mind sharing what kind of camera you have? Those pictures look like they were taken for a profesional magazine. Not only you can grow amazing roses, but your photography skills are top notch.

Wow oh wow! I fell in love the minute that I saw your picture. I went to the website & did a search. It says that it doesn't have it.

Thanks for sharing these lovely photos Helen! I got my AL from Palatine in November too but it's only about a foot tall but forming buds now. I live near Napa and we continue to have many cold and overcast days. It's amazing how much our varying microclimates in the Bay Area impact gardening. I just put my rose in the ground a couple of weeks ago and I hope my blooms look as good as yours. How is fragrance?

I have been wanting this rose for the last five years or more, but it was never available for sale. Palatine seems to be the only company in North America to offer this rose for sale. They seem to only propagate it only once every five years or so, then it seems to be the first item to sell out. You would think that they would propagate this one every year or at least more frequently, so that more people could enjoy it.

I was fortunate to also purchase this rose from Palatine this year. I planted my rose the day it arrived in November but it has not bloomed yet; perhaps later this month. As far as I can tell, this rose, which was released in Germany in 1998, has never been patented here. I am going to contact Mindy Aubuchon of Hummingbird Roses, to see if she is interested in propagating and selling this rose. I will be sending her cuttings of many of the older now rare Austin Roses next month, so that they will be available for more people who are interested in them. It would be easy to include cuttings of AL as well. Hummingbird Roses is a new company in Michigan that sells rose band sized roses. I have received an order of 10 roses and was impressed with the quality of the plants. The price of these roses and cost of shipping, are very reasonable.

Thanks dianela and everyone for the kind words. I agree that we all should thank Diane for introducing this rose to us. When it wasn't available from Palatine, every time I saw this rose from her posts I told myself what do I need to do to bribe Diane so she could send me some of her AL cuttings, lol.

My camera is a Canon T5i, it's an entry level digital SLR camera. Its newer model is the Canon T6i. Besides it's an excellent camera at a reasonable price, I love its touch screen so you can navigate between photos and zoom in and out easily.

girlnamedgalez8a, AL is sold out right now on Palatine website and their bare root order season is over. However, you can always order AL when they open again in September. Here is the link to the rose https://palatineroses.com/rose/augusta-louise .

SJN & vaporvac, you are funny. I think many of us doing that all the time. There're a few new non-David-Austin roses I wanted to try and planned to order it from Regan bare root for $26/rose, but then I talked myself out it using the reason I have too many roses for my garden. However, when I convinced myself that I could squeeze in a few more new ones, I checked out a local whole sale rose nursery near by that sold non DA roses for $25/rose last year and the price this year is $42/rose (non DA). That's a 60% rose inflation.

Ann, I like the fragrance and the blooms last forever on the bush. The open bloom in the pic has been opened for 1 week and I think it can last for 2 weeks. I'm so glad that many of us have a chance to try this rose in our garden. Thanks Palatine Roses.

John, I'm surprised that you didn't ask Diane for some cuttings in the last 5 years :) I remember I really wanted to have Black Magic rose (the red velvet rose that looks magical to my eyes) and tried to look for it everywhere a few years ago, but it is belonged to J&P and they just stopped selling it at that time. So I actually "begged" a gardener in this forum multiple times to send me some cuttings because she was planning to remove her plant or something like that but it didn't work out. Luckily a few years later, Regan had it so I have 3 in my garden now. I learned a good lesson from this experience and try to be patient when looking for some rare roses. If it's meant to be, it will be :)

John, thank you for sharing your treasured roses so they can be available to rose gardeners and for recommending Hummingbird Roses. I checked out their website and I think I will order some roses from them when they open in May. Helen

Thanks Helen. I didn’t know it has never been patented here. There was a thread about AJ last year. We couldn’t do any cuttings until this year. I ordered a few more this spring since I love the colors, the bloom size of this rose. It would make a prefect cutting rose for the tables.

Summer, I didn't know it has never been patented here either. I think AL belongs to the group of roses that considered perfect roses. It has everything from health, look, vase life to lovely fragrance. I like every rose of the Tantau Nostalgic Roses https://www.rosen-tantau.com/en/buy-online/nostalgic/?p=1&o=5&n=12

Wow! I’m impressed with your AL blooms, Helen and Summers! They’re absolutely gorgeous with those varied colors and all those ruffled petals. I certainly didn’t need another rose, but I’m sure glad I got one when it was available. Mine has a fat bud, and I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it opens. I’m very excited for it to bloom, and I think of Diane every time I look at it. It’s cloudy with cool temps right now, so that bud is taking its sweet time opening. My anticipation is building each day. Seeing yours just makes me all the more excited. Lisa
