High-end kitchen appliance advice needed (Miele, Subzero, Wolf)

I'm renovating a house in Hawaii and would love to hear any good/bad experience with the kitchen appliances I'm looking at. Here's what we have so far:

  • Miele KM 6365 30 inch induction cooktop (flush inset)
  • Miele DA 6881 30 inch retractable downdraft (flush inset)
  • Miele G 6885 dishwasher (hidden)
  • Miele H 6680 BP with clean touch steel finish (going under island counter)
  • Subzero classic 36 inch french door fridge/freezer with internal dispenser (panel ready)

The couple of items I'm still debating are the oven and cooktop. I'm considering the Wolf alternatives: the Wolf M Series Contemporary 30 inch wall oven (I love the push open feature) and Wolf 30 inch induction/downdraft. If anyone has info to persuade me they are better than Miele, I'm all ears.

Also, would it be weird to have a Miele cooktop and a Wolf Oven in the same island? Neither are heavily branded as far as I can see but would fussy buyers think that was odd?

For those who like plans, here's the layout. The kitchen isn't large (it's just for a couple) but it's in an open plan area with high ceilings and we want/have to keep the cooktop in an island, hence downdraft. To hide all appliances, the oven will also go under counter in the island.

Thanks!

Thanks!

My experience is more of fitting them into the cabinetry I build in high end homes than an end user. Dont have model numbers handy but the Miele DW with the tap to open feature allows you to hide it with no handles. The subzero French door will have a 1/2" gap around it and between the panels. Their columns, Miele or Gaggenau will have a more built in look.

Here's the Wolf in a kitchen I'm working on right now.

    Hi Dade ,

You already know Miele is Miele and everything else is everything else!

Where two appliances are together you should try to stick to the same manufacturer, if anything to keep the finishes an exact match. You could also try calling the supplier direct and getting a bundle deal if you're g.c. hasn't done so already.

Nice drawings btw - would you consider mirroring the island so the oven is closer to the fridge making a tighter, 'work zone?'

    Thanks,

If you consider your kitchen to be high-end, don’t do a downdraft, do an overhead hood exhaust. Indoor air quality is being given a lot of attention these days, and that trend will increase. A downdraft looks like you aren’t in the know, and/or don’t care, and/or couldn’t afford a proper exhaust.

People opt for a downdraft when they have existing construction that they don’t want to redo and which forces them into a downdraft.

I would avoid any Wolf product with a blue interior. You can search this forum for “Wolf blue chipping” for the many instances of the enamel chipping over the last 10 years. Many posters here have gone through several ovens in a row. The M was designed to try to avoid this issue but it has occurred. At least it is easier to repair with the replaceable bottom.

You can google it too and this website has a couple of the lawsuits over this matter.

There are also some threads about the M oven.

we are going with the Wolfe Induction cooktop because of the short depth of around 4" so we can have a usable drawer underneath. it will be flush mounted. Also going with Miele steam convection oven because it is plumbed and has broiler function. Miele speed convection oven.

There is no need to have all appliances be from one brand, especially in stainless. Choose based on how you cook and what features/performance is important to you. Buyers wouldn't be put off by a combination within the brands you are considering. Now, if most were in those brands but then you had a Frigidaire dishwasher, that might look like you had the original fail and cheapened out on the replacement (and they'd wonder what else you did on the cheap for resale).

I agree in fact I never get clients or myself to buy all appliances one maker there is no such thing as one fits all. IMO you buy appliances for how they work for you and I think both Wolf and SZ are over priced and over rated. As for a DW I still think Bosch is the best .I have never understood a cooktop and a wall oven mounted below thw the counter so I would have a good range either all gas or gas and electic . A true pullout pantry is always the best choice for storage. Downdraft ventinf g is IMO next to useless so when ever possible venting should be on an outside wall vented directly to the out side.

What is a “true pull out pantry”?

Putting an oven below a cooktop would not be my first choice but in this kitchen we built that's what they wanted. Wolf oven , induction top with downdraft behind it. Add to it a pull out on either side just to make things more difficult.

Porsche does make some fun family cars. But I agree, this is general sound advice. Buy the best tool for the specific task. Brand loyalty only goes so far before it gets counter productive.

Unfortunately mixing brands sounds great but they all look different the stainless steel in miele is different than wolf or thermador and so are the handles

I would not worry about mixing brands in stainless - much more important that the appliance function is best for your needs. The stainless itself will be close enough and unless you're doing something wild with handles on one, no one is going to notice that the handles don't match (or if they do and it bothers them, they really need to get a life).

I have had a mix of Dacor, Monogram, GE, and Bosch all in the same kitchen and they all worked fine. Thermador (last gen), GE Cafe, and Panasonic in this one and it's all good.

@jdesign_gw What color cabinets are you using in the photo's attached to your first comment?

you can mix the high end appliances if you do panel ready and put your cabinet panel on them, they will all match.

in my last house i put a wolf induction cooktop, stainless SZ fridge, miele panel dishwasher, fisher paykel panel drawer dishwasher, miele speed oven over miele steam oven.

In Consumer Reports testing, the Miele Lumen dishwasher is one of the lowest rated dishwashers and extremely expensive at $2300:

"Miele has a reputation for high quality, but this dishwasher doesn't quite live up to it. Its Very Good score for washing is below par for models in this price range, and the 170-minute normal wash cycle ties for the longest in the high-end cohort. It does offer an interesting convenience: Knock twice and the door pops open. And when surveyed, CR members give Miele dishwashers strong scores for satisfaction and reliability."

The Bosch SHVM63W53N 300 Series Top Control Tall Tub Dishwasher in Custom Panel Ready performed better and is 1/3rd the price at $809.

The top-rated GE Profile PHP9030DJBB 30 in. Electric Induction Cooktop at $1439 is half the price of the Miele KM6365 ($2800).

Not clear on why you wouldn't simply do a full gas range instead of a cooktop and adjacent wall oven? Will save space overall. Also, I've put the Wolf gas cooktop/downdraft vent in an island before, but that's because there was no other option for location. I'd consider re-configuring the layout to put the range on the perimeter and use a hood vent instead. They work better.

If your ceiling is less than 10 feet - consider this vent. “Best Cirrus Ceiling Mounted Hood“. I have it in my house and it looks and works great.
