That one doesn't go unfortunately. It's too busy with the small tiles and multicolors. The mosaic style backsplash is also very early 2000s. Skip the travertine as well.

With such a beautiful strong stone you want the backsplash to fade into the background. I'd go for a solid white/off-white that matches the stone or a solid cream/tan to compliment the veining.

Thanks so much Sina! I wondered about that. I did want to clarify that the bricked stone is already in place (the back of our wine cabinet located in kitchen). We are keeping it and adding matching bricked stone to the front of the counter. From what I gather, I need to stay more simple with the kitchen backsplash. Makes sense. Do you think I should put something different above range only?

We do live on the beach (Mediterranean Style Resort), so I was also trying to stay with the them of that.

The brick makes sense then if it's for a separate wine area.

No accent tile above the backsplash. It ruins the flow of a kitchen and while they are found in Mediterranean homes really that stone deserves to be the star. Keep the backsplash simple, let your countertops shine, and enjoy your kitchen!

I wouldn’t recommend those with your current cabinets unless you’re going to paint them.

Sina - Do you think the brick is too dated? I just thought that carrying over the stacked/brick stone to the front of the bar/peninsula (where bar stools sit) would make sense considering cost and it does match.

Here are a few subway tiles I saw online. I’m going to try and make a run to a tile store to see some in person. I just don’t want there to be a stark difference between the countertops and backsplash. I was hoping to bring in some of both colors to blend it a bit.

It’s looking like I will be using a subway tile. My fabricator advised me to wait until the counter tops are installed, then bring some samples home to see which works best.

This is our space currently (beach condo in a Mediterranean style Florida resort we bought recently). We have been getting new appliances throughout this month.

Next month, they should be leveling out our peninsula (one level - no bar level), then at that time, they will make a template for our countertops. We will be using the Cambria Britannica Gold in our Kitchen, Wine Cabinet, and Bathroom.

Please ignore our ugly floor grout lines.....working on those! :)

We would try a white or cream subway tile. You might take a piece of the countertop with you and get some different choices and bring them back to check out in your kitchen. Note the tile we used in a design for a client?

That is beautiful Randy! It seems that most are leaning towards the white and creamy subway tiles. It's definitely beautiful, clean, and classy looking. I was hoping to lean a bit more beachy/rustic/informal (we live on an island surrounded by water), but from pictures I'm looking at, it seems the subway tiles (white/creamy) could lean either way. I love the color turquoise, but it should be pretty with the accessories if the background stays neutral.

since you're going for a beachy vibe have you thought of the honed flat pebbles for a backsplash or a crackled look subway tile?

Hi Claire - Yes, initially, that’s what I was looking at. I was looking at the marble/travertine subway tile. I was also looking at some shell type backsplash with a mixture of colors matching the countertop and cabinets. I thought either would be a nice match to the stacked brick on the back of our wine cabinet and will soon be added to the peninsula (barstool side). Maybe since the style seems to be larger subway tiles, I should go with a stone subway tile in white or cream (whatever matches best). I think that would stick to the theme of the place we live at, while also keeping it simple and the focus on the countertop. I would love to bring in something different over the range, but my space might be too small. Below is our view from our balcony (in the front the Gulf of Mexico). I’m trying to inject these colors with accessories throughout. On our side, we have white sand and sea oats. On the back side of our balcony, we have the sound.

That is a beautiful view I would be staring it all day that ocean is so calming and mesmerizing. What kind of lights halogen lights do you have? maybe you change it too a softer yellow LED to make the kitchen look a lot brighter. I actually like the black countertop with your kitchen since your appliances have it as well not that I don't want you to change it just saying. maybe bringing a rug with the colors of the ocean and sand in the dining area can do the trick.

Thank you so much Claire! We are working on the lighting (trying to find warm leds - currently have warm regular dimmable indoor floodlights). We are also getting some under cabinet lighting soon. I love the idea of getting a rug with those beautiful colors. We are ready to get rid of the black countertops (making it one level and extending it out longer a bit). LOL! Just a few weeks ago, all of our appliances were black and very old looking. It was very, very dark in our kitchen. This is a picture (attached) of the color palette surrounding us. Most of these colors are seen outside (orange, taupey, and cobalt blue) and inside (orangey). —— Very Mediterranean. It makes it difficult to update, since everything up to date seems to be grey and white.

its beautiful on the outside...I'm not crazy about the gold and the terracotta with the cobalt blue with white for the inside of the home lol maybe just terracotta and cobalt as walls but the rest I would use as decorative accents plus it looks better outside because it's all surrounded by theses earthy colors . why extend your peninsula..are you making your island wider or have have more depth?

We are making it even with the wall where the built in wine cabinet is. The wine cabinet was added more recently (and they built out the wall in the hall). So, we are just going to have the counter extend some on that side (even with the wine cabinet wall) and should make for more seating space (will be able to add a chair on the side if we want). It will be wider also (in a sense), since we are getting rid of the top level. I think it will be pretty with one big piece of quartz for the peninsula. I’m most excited about this part and will be sure to post pictures when complete, but will probably be a couple of months.
