For the health of the plant you kind of just have to try it and see. You can support hostas in hot and sunny places with lots of water if you want to, up to a certain point. If it's a roasting desert kind of place, probably not...the leaves will melt and crisp.

For aesthetics though, since you are asking about colour, blue hostas tend to stay more blue in shade. Also lutescent hostas are more likely to remain yellow rather than white in shade. I like to keep Ben Vernooij in the shade so it keeps its colours better.

Agree with "not really". There are general guidelines but there are always exceptions.

heres the deal .. if you hang around here ... these peeps will addict you ... lol ... trust me.. there are much worse addictions ....

now .. hosta are shade tolerant ... they just do fine in sun ... and in fact.. over the years.. grow faster .... BUT ... and there usually is one around ... they start getting ratty looking.. late in summer ... if they get more sun than water ...

hosta are water hogs ... they literally sweat ... perspire .... they can give off more water than they take in .... if not watered properly ...

and once they start doing that.. then you start getting damage ... brown edges.. etc ...

but they wont die.. and in fact.. might end up bigger.. the following year.. due to all the extra sunshine ....

so ... to come full circle.. it depends where you are .. how hot summer is.. how long your season is ... and watering ...

all that said.. there are the old workhorses ... which rarely have any problems ... regardless of all the above ... i call them run them over with them truck plants ... and of course.. they are the plain old standards ... which might see for sale anywhere .. cheap ...

but ... there it is again ... if we addict you.. you soon need more than just the old standards ...
