Custom Cabinets for Family Room / Kids Play area

last modified: 7 years ago

Hey Houzz enthusiasts ,

I want to convert part of the family room into a kids study area with cabinets , open shelves and study table .

I am looking to have a maximum depth of 14-15 inches as I have a projector screen installed in the ceiling ( 16" away from wall ). My goal is to maximize storage and have plenty of space for kids to store toys, books and have a desk to sit and study.

I came up with some design ideas of what the layout could be. Any feedback /recommendations would be super helpful.

PS: I am not an architect and this my first very design so please pardon my ignorance if I violated any architectural principles. I am just a regular day trying to make space comfortable for 2 lil ones.

    Hi Ankit,

You're off to a good start! This drawing seems as if you're planning to close the window...is that so?

thanks for the reply. I am not planning to completely cover the windows. I want to have floating shelves with open back to allow natural light for the study section.

I wouldn't' recommend the floating shelves over the window as it doesn't seem like you have the accommodation of wall space on the left side where the patio door is for the depth of the shelves. Also if you were planning to place books and such on the shelves that would maybe defeat the purpose of allowing light to come through. Without seeing the other sides of the room or knowing dimensions I don't see where else would be a good place for the shelves. If it weren't for the pull down projector I'd probably recommend a bookshelf as a small divider between the spaces. I offer a couple of affordable design services including a floor plan service that maybe you'd be interested in getting some more one on one assistance. I'd be happy to help! www.hadijarowe.com/services

It just doesn't work to build a study area into a window for the reasons mentioned above, not to mention possible breakage of the window. We are talking about children, you know.

What is on the other side of the room where there are high stool? Can that area be used?

By the way, how old are these children? Are they the same sex or opposite sex?

You are saying it is a study area, but you are using it for toy storage.

Do these children have their own bedrooms?

Do they have desks in their bedrooms?

Space for toy storage in their bedrooms?

Why do you need such an elaborate structure in the family room?

Look a t Besta from Ikea it has great storage looks nice and you can make it look custom. I would not have shelves on the window they will always look cluttered from out side. As for the study area as your kids get older you will find they use their laptop in their bedrooms more often and as much as you think they will use the desk it just isn’t so.Right now all the toy storage should be low enough to keep little guys from climbing and of course all that storage needs to be attached to the walls so I would probably put storage under the window and not so high up the wall.

I am thinking along the same lines as Patricia but I find shopping, delivery or hauling and assembly of Ikea to be quite frustrating. I would find child appropriate (ages?) pieces that serve your purposes. I found this set and I think while they are younger, a pair of these would work well. Versatile features. Priced reasonably.
