Kitchen layout with 5 doors! Help!!!

We are trying to design kitchen layout for our 1913 Bungalow and are really stuck. We have a couple ideas but wanted to throw it out to see if others had better ones. The biggest issue is there are 5 passageways -- most of which are fixed -- in the layout so long runs and traditional kitchen shapes are impossible.

The main goals are to update the kitchen, decrease size of the bathroom, and to make a passageway to the backyard with french doors. Here is a rough sketch of existing layout. There is an island currently there but no point in putting it in since it will change.

A few notes:

1. There is a main sewer stack next to toilet which will be expensive to move (up to 4-5k in our market) so not moving it would save us a chunk but can move it if there is some amazing layout that results.

2. Bathroom can theoretically move to anywhere in the kitchen/bath outline, except keep #1 in mind.

3. Would like site line from front door to back of yard if possible.

4. The windows in kitchen are 24" off the ground so that's not usable space unless windows moved.

Thanks for taking a look!

Do you have a whole floor sketch to post?

Were you thinking of taking out part of the wall between kitchen and bathroom?

Can the kitchen be moved to a different existing room of the house? It seems that everything in the house is flowing out of this particular space so it may better serve as a living or family room. I don't see the whole floor plan of the house so I am not sure how the existing living room and dining room are situated. In any case, it may be near impossible to get a truly functional and aesthetically pleasing kitchen in that space without revision of the house's overall floor plan (thus Jan's good suggestion of an architect)

I agree with Jan. You need a professional to help rearrange this whole area. A pro will see things you haven’t even thought of. You have plenty of space for your wish list. Go for it.

Story of my life. And if you do get a pro, let us know what they come up with! Good luck.

If having a wide galley would be acceptable, you could add a peninsula which would provide a couple of seats, and that might leave enough space for a small breakfast nook. This idea depends on the exact amount of space available between the bedroom wall and new bathroom wall. I drew the plan with deep counters, to match the depth of a standard fridge box, and 30" French doors. If there is not enough space available between the bedroom and bathroom, then standard counter depth would work. (The fridge and pantry could be moved down toward the range, to make the DR entry wider. See alternate plan, below.)

A GW member from Philadelphia did this very successfully a few years ago, but using a patio door. I'll try to find her kitchen pics.

You can do a search on her name to find her kitchen progress threads.

ETA2, alternate plan. The sink and DW are on the other side of the kitchen, partially hidden from the front door view, by the fridge. Since you have water on both walls, you could put a small prep sink on the peninsula, so that you aren't crossing the aisle with prepped items.

Appliance locations can be adjusted to accommodate a new beam between bedroom and bathroom wall, if necessary, and extra deep counters would provide space for supports--if necessary.

Thanks everybody for taking a look! I totally agree, the kitchen layout is a mess. Thanks for the drawings mamagoose! This is close to one of the ideas we had but I like yours better. I will check out the GW member for Philly and see how hers turned out.

I'll see if I can find a layout for the whole main floor to post.

    Thanks again!

One more--I tried to come up with a plan that puts the sink and range on the same wall, with only one sink, similar to Carrie B's layout. There might be just enough space; considering the new opening to the DR, and 30" French doors, prep space should be ap 36". The small cabinet to the right of the DW could be omitted if the other elements seem too cramped. But, dish mess is m/l in view of the entry. If the small cabinet beside the chimney is full height, that would help block the view of the clean-up zone. If you need support for a beam on the corner, the fridge could be moved to the right--just not so far that the French door overlaps it.

I'd be interested in your other ideas for the space, if you'd care to post them.
