In a milder zone, but never had any issue with Hinokis in winter. And I have a collection of them :-)

they can take damage in winter.. in my z5 MI ... usually for the first year or two.. until fully established ... and also from winter sun on warm days.. followed by blistering cold winds at night ...'

btw .. they are conifers .. and should be treated as such [pruning rules] ... but they are also trees .. and basically never stop growing ... most height estimates are at ten years.... and you can double that in 20 ...

What drew me to the Hinoki's was the winter interest color, if not the unique profile you get with it's leaves. And all that being hacked, pruned and shaped away in that video

I am right on the northern boundary of their growing area, but my workplace on the NH sea coast is a full zone warmer. There are Hinoki there, and I know of one in a warmer spot in my own town as well. Both sites have them placed on the north side of buildings where they get bright light and several hours of direct sun in summer, but are largely shaded in winter. I don’t know if that was deliberate siting or just coincidence, but in both sites I see absolutely no winter damage at all. Two different cultivars, though I don’t know the name of either for sure.
