Countertop Suggestions??

last modified: 7 years ago

Hi! We’re just over a year into our construction / renovation and it’s time to pick out our countertops... We’ve been pretty good at making decisions on other things so far but are struggling a bit with this one. We’ve looked at a lot of options over the past few weeks and now really have to choose something this weekend or we’ll start slowing other things down! Wondering if anyone has any suggestions?? Looking at either quartz or quartzite. We have dark grey cabinets and white backsplash. Thank you!!!

I love a quartzite that resembles marble. Take a look and pick your own slab. VERY impotant!

What are your floors gonna be? I think Brittanica would be nice!

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions!

Jan - yup we’ve definitely started to realize in the past few weeks that we picked out our backsplash and countertops in the wrong order! Backsplash boxes are all sitting piled up in the kitchen ready to be installed as soon as we get the counters in though! We got the backsplash months ago ♀️

Karen - have attached a pic of our floors. Think they’re getting installed next week.

I personally would go with a quartzite here. Take a cabinet door & a floor sample to the stone yard & see what you like.

I think we need to know the flooring and I have no idea who your KD was but all of these should have been decided long ago . forget the bacsplash until you choose your counter that is the order you do this.

Patricia - see just a couple of posts up for floor pic. Think I might have posted it right at the same time as you posted your comment.

Yup, we’ve definitely been a bit last minute on a few things! But so far have managed to choose things before we start holding anything else up. And as long as we manage to decide this weekend we should be good. We’ve spent the past few saturdays at slab yards and have taken our cabinet door but not the floors so will take that on Sat. We don’t have a kitchen designer.

So the floor is light? What is the dark one?I think you are going to see.......pink!!! in the light one.

I love your floors. Our hickory floors have a pink undertone & they are great.

I’m seeing pink too. Hopefully it’s just my monitor. ?

Yup, it’s the light one. Not sure what the dark one was, just something in the background. Hmm, we had the sample at home and it didn’t seem pink (we looked at it in lots of parts of the house), but I guess we’ll find out when it’s delivered in the next few days!

Is the countertop going to be installed before the floors? I was going to suggest Bianco Drift (partly because I love that pattern but sadly it wouldn't work in my house) but I think it's too cool with your floors.

A lot of natural wood has a pink undertone. Don't let it scare you away. Are you staining it? I love the natural look.

Thanks, Mark_Rachel - i like it too! No, we’re not staining it.

Chocolatebunny - the floors are going to be installed before the countertops - floors are confirmed for delivery next Thursday and then will get the countertops in after that. We’re doing waterfall for island.

Consider functionality a bit more than just design. How often do you cook? Natural stone takes a bit more to maintain then artificial. Cost can be a factor too. For design, we can recommend white / light gray countertops. Maybe a mix of natural look to the design. The cabinet color is an excellent choice.

The floors are pretty. If you’re doing a waterfall you should consider a vein pattern with movement, but only if you have a really really REALLY good fabricator that will match it up. We used MSI calacatta laza for our modern home bar with waterfall counters and he did an amazing job of matching all of the veins...we did buy a whole other slab (3 total) to make sure we had enough to be able to do this, so keep that in mind.

Novel - thanks for your suggestions!

Karen - ohhh so pretty! I’ve seen the Laza slabs at MSI but that’s helpful to see it in your pics :) I think my favorites so far are the calacatta Laza and calacatta Trevi for quartz and also calacatta quartzite.

With the simplicity in your backsplash you could really go any route. I would consider using a grey color grout to create a bit of contrast in between the white cube pattern tiles. I would continue that contrast with clean white quartz countertops. With your simple backsplash you could easily pair a countertop with grey marble veining as well without making the space too busy. If you decide to contrast your tiles, match the grout to any grey marbling you may have in your countertop!

JY Design - definitely agree about doing a grey grout :)

We’re thinking of one these two quartzites... (hardwood, cabinet, backsplash are all in the photos too).

I just put in dark charcoal stained cabinets I always feel like the odd one out, nice to see someone else with dark cabinets. I had a very hard time with my countertops and island but ended up with a white marble look quartz on perimeter counter and a black marble look quartz on the island. Can’t wait to see what you choose.

for dramatic effect, #2.. goes great with cabs, ok with B/S but not seeing it with your floors...

quiet, in the background #1. and i see pink undertones in it, so it will tie your floor. although i don't see the B/S coordinating with #1...
