Question about tent caterpillars

I always assumed they go in the ground to pupate, no idea why. They are currently crawling all over the place, about 20 feet away from the cherry tree they were on. I have never seen them before wandering so far, so I tried to look it up. All I found is protected place. what does that mean? On the ground? Are they able to attach the cocoon to something? Just curious what to look out for since I don’t want to hurt any.

My shirt is certainly not a protected spot.

Neither is daffodil foliage already leaning over.

A trunk of a palm may work?
