Fringe tree blooms on the way

I planted this fringe tree as a small seedling in October 2012, and this is the first year I’m getting flowers. Every spring I ask it if it’ll flower for me this year (I ask the same question of the button bush and the serviceberry, but they haven’t answered yet), and this year it said it would.

Well, the fragrance is better than the photo...sweetly scenting the whole yard. The small tree has been in the ground for perhaps four years (maybe 5?) and is only 5 feet tall, but this is first time to have more than 3 blossom panicles on it. No sign of the beetles that are a reported threat, and hope I never do see them.

Nice, mine is just opening leaf buds today. It has bloomed (but only a single stem) the last two years. I hope this is the year for a show.

After close inspection this morning, I concluded mine is a female tree. But I seriously doubt anyone has a male close enough for me to get berries.

i have seen articles that mention they can also produce some perfect flowers in spite of them being dioecious so you may get some drupes. i think this is the case with my specimen. i have seen only one in the neighborhood and that one is almost a mile away. i do get a few fruits on the tree every year but they are so large that the only bird that regularly visits my wooded site that could easily swallow them is the easter blue jay. they will normally fall to the ground uneaten. i sometimes collect them and toss them into the woods, hoping for some volunteers.

i fear my tree has seen its best years and is now in decline but it has been a real pleasure to have in the garden, especially the sight and fragrance of it in bloom.

I've had a Chionanthus virginicus for about 25 years. I'm about ready to cut it down. It's the last plant to leaf out in the Spring and looks dead alongside it's neighbors. See below. Kinda ruins the scene.

Emerald ash borers have attacked my fringetrees, killing one & reducing the other two to masses of sucker-sprouts.

Interesting. Any other experiences with EAB? I have been able to find very little information about their susceptibility, other than one report that mentioned minor damage in an area that was experiencing extremely high pressure from the pest. The rest of the information I've found just seems to be referencing that one report.

My understanding is that EAB has not yet spread to the Asian variety, hopefully it stays that way. I planted a Tokyo Tower approx 3 years ago. The leaves at the top are almost open, the ones lower finally opened a week ago and we are in the second week of May. Limited flowering and not much of a fall color. But the bark is showy and the blooms will come at some point.
