The "problem" with the potting material Sphagnum Moss is the tropical myth. It is an orchid that comes from the tropics, so the plant gets too much watering and misting.

Your best bet is to find some complete Phalaenopsis notes written for California and go from there.

I purchased a Phalaenopsis potted the same way and in the same mix and watered it four times in three months and then repotted it. But that is for here where Phalaenopsis are considered difficult.

The mix I've had success with here in SoCal is bark and sphagnum moss. I have 5 happy reblooming phals in that mix - in clay pots with big holes. I water every two weeks or so. I guess I'm just wondering if it's better to repot this one to check for any root rot etc and I think the answer is probably yes. I keep having to relearn this because I hate to lose the bloom. The plan is for me get the potted properly and eventually give them back to my sister (who got them as a gift). I was sort of wondering if others agreed that repotting right away was best - in this case, with no evidence of rot, and it's not in creepy black sand like one I posted about a few months ago...

Is the moss it’s in soaking wet? If not you can probably wait, but keep a close eye on those roots.

I'd repot now. I find that Phals generally do fine repotting during bloom.

Thanks all. I went ahead and repotted. Glad I did - the roots were very tightly bound in moss and I think they'll be happier now. We shall see if the bloom stays. Fingers crossed. The other phal's roots were in worse shape, but I repotted it and cut the bloom to see it might produce a keiki.
