Beautiful space!

A fresh coat of taupe paint for the walls would be a great start! Selecting a paint color with a bit more grey in it will help to pull in the fireplace stone. A new box-beam styled mantel extending the full width of your fireplace surround and an updated ceiling fan will help to modernize the space as well.

Agree with Nanke’s advice ...

Very traditional house so I'm assuming you are looking for modern farmhouse? Replace mantle with a big chunky wood version. New paint, stick with the whites. Replace ceiling fan with a funky modern metal one. That's it. Your furnishings should do the rest to get that modern farmhouse feeling.

We would suggest trying a new fan or get a chandelier in place of the fan, adding a new mantel, and to paint the gold part of the fireplace box black. You could also paint the walls a nice new color.
