American Crossvine. It is a native vine and is, in fact, traditionally the plant that hummingbirds 'follow' as it blooms from south Texas northward as they migrate. This year our local hummingbirds, for whatever reason, got ahead of themselves and came back before local crossvines even began to bloom It is a woody wine that is evergreen to semi-evergreen and grows well, but is not overly aggressive. Several named cultivars have been released into the nursery trade. The one that I planted years ago and that is most commonly found in nurseries and garden centers is 'Tangerine Beauty'. A newer one is 'Shalimar Red' and it does have a bit more of a red tint to it than 'Tangerine Beauty' but it certainly is not actually red. They bloom heavily in Spring and then go through cycles of rebloom the rest of the year. They can climb pretty high if there is an available structure to support them, but they won't climb much higher than the available structure that is available to them, so they are pretty easy to maintain.
