Hi Dawn, some of our favorite shrubs for around the house include boxwood, any of the panicle hydrangeas, Tor spirea, any of the burgundy foliaged ninebarks, as well as lilacs and viburnum to name just a few. A mix of ornamental grasses and hardy perennials would balance out the plant palette. We are in Wisconsin so the plants we use would work well in Michigan too. Take a look at our profile for some inspiration! My best advice is to hire a local landscape designer to come up with a plan. It really is worth the investment. And I think that is especially important for the backyard if you are thinking of adding a pool at some point.

How much color are you looking for? And how much work? Because if you're me...well, that's a large property and, like mine, you could support enormous gardens. But those are enormous work. With the beautiful way that's sloped, you could do some amazing stuff there, though.

As a general rule, it's annuals for continuous color in summer (but nothing in winter), perennials for spotty and moving color in spring, summer, and fall (but usually nothing, or not much, in winter). And shrubs for greenery in summer and, sometimes, winter.

Check with one of your nearby universities which has a Horticultural Department. They can supply you with a list of great shrubberies and grasses which are native to your area. No need to waste money ordering things which won't work there. Also keep in mind that not every landscape item needs to be a plant. You might enjoy some nice rocks or statuary in a flower bed. Take a look at something like sundials or armillaries. But please no bird bath or statue of a woman pouring water from a jug LOL. Good luck with your project.

Hello Dawn. Did you ever install your new landscaping?

Wow. Business in the front and a party in the back. I’d get rid of that leaning tree in the back. Find your zone first. Decide where you want sun, shade, and privacy. If you want privacy you have to put the plants up closer to what you are screening. Decide on colors you like and when bloom time is important to you. Then go to garden sites and look at plants and find what’s recommended for your zone. Go to a local garden center with pics of your property and plants you like. Talk to the workers there. They should be very helpful. Make sure you plant in groups, not just random here and there. Also, decide if you want a perfect, formal look or more free and wild . And finally be realistic about how much time you have and maintenance you want. Good luck.
