Kitchen Layout Review

I gave my ideas to a kitchen designer, and he made the 3-D drawing. After thinking about it further, I decided I wanted 12" pullouts on either side of the range, which frees up room to add a narrow pantry cabinet to the left of the microwave/wall oven. I am waiting for the final drawings, but wanted to ask for another set of eyes., particularly on my version of the layout below.

Your designer has done a great job for you and now you're going to s---w it up?

Put the pantry next to the fridge. 12" drawers are USELESS. They only hold pot holders and towels. You can't put any utensils in them, and you're going to screw up the symmetry the designer has created for your back wall. You need the counter on either side of the range.

You're not in the pantry all the time, and you don't need the small counter next to the fridge when you have the island right across from the fridge doors.

I have the same set up in my kitchen with counters on either side of the range and they are the best.

Thanks Beverly. The original design was mine, too. I just had the designer draw it up for me. And, by 12" pullouts I don't mean drawers -- I mean like this where one would be for utensils and knives, and other would be for EVOO, cooking spray, spices, etc. I intended the cabinet to the left of the refrigerator to be for the coffee pot, coffee mugs, wine glasses, drinking glasses, etc. I have a large walk-in pantry across from the kitchen, so I don't need the pantry cabinet, per se. I was thinking it would be nice to have for small appliances I don't want on the counter like the Vitamix, juicer, etc. Thanks for your input!

I highly recommend the pullout pictured above - I have one similar myself, but mine is the 9" version.

Here is how my wall is set up.

It's one of my favorite things in my kitchen and takes up SO little space. I found mine "new-in-box" on eBay for less than my kitchen guy could buy it.

I would not do one on the other side. That will just be in the way if you're cooking breakfast/brunch and someone is trying to get mugs out. Ditch that one.

I have a 12” cabinet for trays, just with a rev a shelf divider for $10. Love it.

I'd keep the wider drawers, and skip the pull-outs. You can use dividers in the drawers, and keep the same items in sections. I'd also flip the island layout, especially if you use Beverly's suggestion to put the pantry beside the fridge (although I think the pantry beside the MW/oven is OK, and gets the oven out of the corner, leaving 'step-back' space in the long aisle).

Moving the sink and DW to the end of the island will give you more landing space in front of the fridge.

Its pretty darn good layout, I think one pull out would be enough. those larger drawers are life savers in the long run. I also agree that cabinet doors and seating get thumbs down. its just in the way all the time. been there.

I just notice that the fridge door opens into the oven wall... might also be annoying.

@ Jane: The drawing doesn't depict this, but the beer fridge would be turned so the opening it towards the "white space" on the right. The intent is for guests to be able to access the drink refrigerator from the great room w/ out having to to through the kitchen. As far as the 2 cabinets under the counter, I really don't have much planned to go in them for now other than holiday serving pieces. They're bonus cabinets intended to make the island larger. So I am comfortable with them being under the overhang. But I absolutely see what you mean!

@mama goose_gw zn6OH: The 36" wide drawers are part of both designs, which I am very excited about.. The question is really 36" drawers on either side of the range, followed by 18" drawers next to them. Or, 12" pullouts on either side ( where one would be for utensils and knives, and other would be for EVOO, cooking spray, everyday spices, maybe liquid measuring cup, etc.) and then the 36" drawers. I feel like the 12" pullouts would be very practical b/c they allow for taller "standing items" which will allow me to get those items out of an upper cabinet. I don't intend to put a pantry cabinet next to the refrigerator as I like that for the coffee station. Like the beer refrigerator its location is intended to allow guests to access drinks without invading my space. :-) Great point about the "step-back" space! I had not thought of that!

@ RL Relocation LLC: I thought about only one pullout, but I hate to break up the symmetry.
Thanks for pointing out the refrigerator and the oven door.

Jane, I think you missed the view of the beer fridge on the elevation; it opens on the short side of the island. But thanks for that visual. ;)

I was thinking of deep drawers with organizers, which would be more versatile that pull-outs, if you ever want to rearrange the way the kitchen is organized. Similar to below:

18" drawers could be organized for the items you want to keep in 12" pull-outs.

Now to throw off the whole thing, maybe the ovens shouldn't be in the corner as they are, it might be hard to get in and out of in a corner you only have access from one side. mine is against a wall and i hate that I can only get at it from one side.

@ RL Relocation LLC: That is actually an opening to the walk-in pantry. This is a rough mock up of the kitchen that has been modified somewhat, but this does accurately show the opening to the pantry. I think I am leaning towards the original back wall w/ no pantry cabinet.

Yes, because now the oven door opens in front of an entry.

That looks a lot like my sister-in-law’s layout. It’s really nice, but make sure there is plenty of room between the fridge and the island. Hers is cramped when the fridge door is opened.
