Someone here recently made a comment that the Bosch refrigerators are no longer being made at the same plant as Miele and Thermador's. So step one in the comparison might be determining who makes the Bosch refrigerator.

Two vastly different choices. You can buy two and half Bosch for the price of the Subzero. I chose the KitchenAid Architect II over the Bosch. I viewed them as equals. It was purely aesthetic on my part to make the choice. The KA has been trouble free. There is a gasket on the freezer that may need some caulk, but the service company knows this.

On the other hand, if you plan on staying in the home forever, you cant kill the Subzero.

Just to clarify, I am not trying to compare a Sub-Zero to a standard Bosch refrigerator. I am comparing to the Bosch built-in -- Refrigerator and Freezer columns, which are part of the Benchmark series. The refrigerator column model number is

B30IR900SP.

As of 4 months ago, Bosch Benchmark refrigerators were made in Germany. Other models are made in China and Turkey. Its difficult to keep track of this stuff.

I agree the reason to buy a Sub Zero is if you intend to keep it 20+ years. Its not cheap to rebuild a compressor after but its about 30% of the cost of replacing it. My 42" side by side has been fine for 25 years but I have it cleaned and serviced every other year.

I had a 42" SZ side by side in my apartment before renovating. When I redid the kitchen, I put in a 36" french door over under model. There are several things about a side by side which I dislike--consider and see if you care: (1) in the side by side, the fruit and vegetable drawers are on the bottom whereas they are at a more convenient waist-height in the over under model--to me that is the real deal breaker; (2) in a side by side, the freezer is not wide enough--sometimes, I would need to put a sheet pan or similar item in the freezer and there was no room to lay it flat--annoying but not as big a deal as the placement of the produce drawers and (3) I found the multiple drawers in the freezer to hold less than the large divided drawer in the over under model--not that big a deal but definitely a minus.

One more thing. I open my fridge at least ten times as often as I open the freezer. I think most people would say the same thing. So having freezer space at eye level isn't important. The configuration of the fridge is much more important to me. I believe that the SZ comes in a 42" wide model right now. The only thing that could be better than my 36" SZ over under is one that is six inches wider!

Thanks. I have a french door fridge now and while I do love having the ability to put in a large pan on occasion, the lack of organization of the freezer drawer is driving me crazy. I freeze a lot of things like herbs, sauces, nuts, etc. and having multiple layers of stuff to dig through is getting frustrating. There are definitely pros and cons to each set up!

Sorry, I misunderstood. You might want to also consider the Thermador columns, too.

My subzero has leak that saturated insulation, render it unreparable. Garbage after 12 years in small family. waste of $$
