a1an, that's been my approach, the consensus for me, is not. I'll continue with that theory though.

I realize this thread is now a year old..but for edification of anyone that wants to read it. I have found crocus tommasinianus and crocus malyi to be growing and multiplying fairly freely in my unwell drained clay soil that's often saturated.

I guess I will find out next year myself. Instead of a low watering annual, I'm putting in some medium-water requirements (sunpatiens) which will be more irrigated than last year.

Well, my clay only required two waterings last year for normal perennials...it rained ALL year, the crocus were brilliant this year. Does that help reassure you? I feel if you don't keep it sopping wet at all times, you should be ok.
My technique is wait as long as I possibly can to water (before wilting..or maybe just as it wilts (yeah my bad)), just like houseplants don't water on a schedule.
