tiled shower floor height?

So a contractor friend is going to be redoing our master bathroom and we are putting in a tiled walk-in shower.

Tonight we went through some of the details and while he said if I wanted him to he could work with the wedi/kerdi systems he never has and they just do a "mud job" to manually build an appropriately pitched base, throw down a membrane and then tile...

One concern I have is the height of the shower floor. Ideally I would love a curbless look but thats not in the budget so I have accepted there will be a curb. He was explaining tonight that the curb all said and done would probably be about 6" high but that once you step into the shower, at the curb, the pan is only maybe an inch or two below the top of the base plate for the glass wall...and would then pitch from there to the drain.

The shower is 42"x72"

I was wondering is this a pretty typical floor height in the shower? I feel like in most of the photos I see online i looks like the shower floor is the same height as the bathroom floor, but when I picture what he is describing, I feel like im going to be stepping "up" into the shower since it will be a few inches higher. But for all I know this is normal, and the difference in those two floors isnt really visbile to the eye.
