Can you remove everything except the candles and art and post another pic?

The brick itself is nice and classic. I agree that a new mantel, new screen, and some decluttering would help the space a lot

Thanks for posting additional pics. I’m thinking no screen and maybe the mantel is okay with those white candles. Ditto on the art; it’s too similar in color to the screen but may be fine once everything else is thinned out a bit. It’s worth a shot before you invest in a new mantel or whitewash. I know sometimes I keep adding when I should be subtracting. :-)

Paint it a deep color that relates to something else in the room or nearby other rooms? I see this a lot on Property Brothers Buying and Selling. They either paint it to blend or contrast depending on the vibe in the whole area.

I think if you simply change the color of the mantel the rest of the fireplace works just fine.

This isn't the best example since it is a different style of FP, but close enough to get the idea. Remove the mantel, stain the brick black or a charcoal brown that works with your flooring and simply hang the art. Every room can use a touch of black, but sample on white poster boards to find the dark color that looks best with your floors. If you don't want to remove the mantel, paint it, and all the white trim around the FP, black. With a mantel, use a smaller piece of art no wider than the firebox that can hang 5" above the mantel and leave at least 10" of wall above.

I agree with Beverly. Paint the mantel. Keep the screen. Done.

@Patricia Colwell... That’s a thought but I’m not sure If I can get that done right now. I was looking for a quick fix.

I had my fireplace sealed and covered over. I removed all the stone facing and slate mantel. Now I have a wonderful wall and can decorate the room without the "elephant" taking over. I never used the FP and never planned to. I've unobtrusively marked the wall where the opening is so that when I sell, the new buyers can open it if they so choose.

Clad the Fireplace with Stone or tile, like we did in this project.

Nothing wrong with your fireplace, it's just styled incorrectly. I would keep the brick as is, it's not a bad colour. Your fireplace screen is nice but I find the colour clashes with the colour of your brick. Screen also looks odd because it's not folded around the fireplace box enough. I would remove everything from the hearth and fold out that screen properly. I'd also spray paint the screen black. Replace mantle with a chunky wood hand hewn one. I find your artwork also clashes with the brick and your screen, choose something less busy and simpler. Maybe a round mirror with thick wood frame? Remove the knick knacks and only put one large decor piece on one end of the mantle. So what you would see is, brick fireplace, wood mantle, black screen, round wood mirror, and one decor piece n be end of mantle. And that's it. Don't over decorate it.

No brown dog is wrong. Just get rid of the screen entirely. You don’t use it anyway. Limewash the bricks with rambio, wooden mantle to break up the flat wall of brick. Get rid of all the knickknacks on the mantle and the artwork. Get a round mirror. The coolest thing would be to paint the interior of the box black, but that really smells!

We have almost the same look with the tall windows on either side. In our case, the brick was already painted (ugly beige) when we bought the house so it was no loss to paint it white per the designer's suggestion. We put an electric "wood" stove in front of the box just because I wanted one. **In no way is this picture meant as a finished product - I am aware that it needs work. It's shared just as a visualization aid for the OP.**

We had a similar problem last year with the ugliest fireplace ever. We tiled it over and boxed in the brick mantel to hide it all. It was hard work but we got there and now we love it!

I like the screen but I would paint it in a darker color. I think a dark bronze would be interesting. Also, if you want to put candles in the firebox, remove the screen

A more colorful painting would give you a good start. If you will never use the fireplace, you can remove the screen and just put a faux-wood bundle on a firewood rack. I would darken the mantel just a bit so it isn’t so bright. Remove the gray basket and the word. I would leave the brick as is because it is in good condition.

If you can afford it, tiling over it is another great option. We did that at our previous home with Calacutta marble subway tiles, but there are so many beautiful options. You could do a bigger tile 6x12 laid horizontally and a new mantle and you’d have a whole new room. Painting or limewashing is the cheapest bang for your buck.
