OT: non-AV blooms 2019

last modified: 7 years ago

The 2018 thread has exceeded 100 post and we are in a different year. So seems wisest to start a 2019 thread and put the old 2018 to rest. For those who might wish to still peruse the 2018 thread, here's a link for you:

OT: non-AV blooms 2018

Starting the new thread, I present to you:

Begonia dregei

Grew this puppy from seed. It was inhabiting one of my terrariums for a while, but was getting bit too large. (Also, I have a new baby one that I wanted to put in the terr since this one seemed to do so well.) Hopefully, the transition to a less pampered set of conditions will go smoothly. I know it needs shaped, just can't decide where to prune....

I love that begonia! Did you train it to grow that way or did it just "do" it? Did I tell you I also have a wish book for Begonias and another one for General Plants? lol Rosie

It just grew that way. It definitely could use some training and trimming though. Not very experienced in that dept but will have to make the attempt.

I've put a few rooted cuttings up for sale. Be curious to see how well that goes.

WHERE are they up for sale? Rosie

I love it! Hmm... I always get annoyed at how stalky Begonias get but I could dig a begonia grown like that! I'm gonna ask my grandma for a start of her pretty begonia. It's a nice one with petite double blooms. What kind of light does a begonia need to be grown indoors?

Depends on the begonia. Some, like the wax begonias one often sees as a bedding plant, want lots of strong light even outside. (Wax begonias can take full sun outside all day in my area.) Many of the tuberous begonias can handle shade but seem to do better with bright shade to bright indirect light.

Anyone know where I can get a start of this one? My grandma lost hers and I would really like to get a start!

Didn't even know that type of wax begonia existed. Interesting!

If you can find a nursery,,,go there. It is a bedding plant and yes,,,gorgeous!!! Good luck in your search. Rosie

WOW!!!! What a beautiful petunia!!! Does it have a name??? Never have seen this before. With all of the splashy color I can't tell for sure but it looks ruffled on the edges? Rosie

Just had to share this! It's my first try at an orchid other than the Moth orchid. I have the tag but I forget what kind it is now. LOL.

Also have these lovely things blooming. :) Episcia.

Oh Su how beautiful !!!! Is your orchid a Vanda Orchid? I would love to get a Paphiopedilum. The one with spotted leaves. Some people call it a ladyslipper orchid but it sure is pretty !!!! That is a nice large Episcia! Does it have a name? Or Noid? Rosie

No, Su's orchid is a Dendrobium of some kind. :-)

Thanks Paul !!!! Sure is pretty though. Rosie

Time to give this thread a shot in the arm.......

Love the bright read flowers. Here are a couple of pics of my orchid Psychopsis Mendenhall Hildos. I bought it at an orchid show a couple of years ago and the bloom stalks started in growing in March and bloomed a week or so ago. The bloom stalks are over 2 ft. long! Also, when the current flower dies (which I've heard is in about a month), it keeps sending up new buds on the same bloom stalk for quite a while. I can already see the new bud forming just behind each flower. Isn't it the nuttiest thing you've ever seen?

That is really different! And pretty! Rosie

Very cool! - and you don't even have to stake it for support - amazing.
