No idea & I would like to know because it looks like my mystery rose here. I only have one non identified rose in my whole garden & it's driving me crazy. I know we are in very different zones; but I'm curious what the overall growth is like? How big is the bloom?

Bloom is not very big, maybe a couple inches?

I thought of Sweet Chariot, which does have similar-looking leaves, but its blooms are even smaller and they often occur in clusters.

Thank you Ingid, the plant itself is quite tall, I just checked..bloom is about 1.5 inch, plant is over 4 feet high after a severe haircut earlier this spring. Medium thorns, canes are a bit lax, can bend them

It's not an Austin, is it?

I don't think it's an Austin. Mine has the same size blooms & leaf size. Plant is smaller; likely due to climate. Is this your first bloom? Just curious about colour, mine has been dark purple to lighter depending on weather.

Was this in a DA box? If so, I imagine it is an Austin of some sort or at least something they offer. No? From where do thoses DA boxed roses come?

Mine is a first bloom. After 3 yrs!! Nice old rose perfume. Plant is tall...its grafted .

Vapor, it was in. DA box/pot, cant recollect exactly how it was packaged. But I do recollect whole foods only had DA roses.

At that time, I had some bands from Chamblees that did not make it, and I bought 3 or 4 from whole foods. Most died over the 2017 winter that was rely bad. This one never bloomed, and i was ready to toss this and the one next to it which never bloomed as well, and lo and behold
see one bloom. No idea what this is tho...

I was also thinking it looks like RdV. I got mine from David Austin website. If you rub the leaves the have a peppery smell.

It definitely has the RdV coloring, the petal count appears incorrect but is a baby plant and that could change. The leaves appear correct for Rdv too...

What causes a problem, it is labeled an Austin, probably is not, and that opens up a big can of worms of possibilities...

Good luck... If it is RdV you will know soon. All of the plants I have grown had a tendency to "take off"

Isn't RdV almost thornless? There is a fair amount of prickles in this plant. I could not detect any smell from the leaves..

Yes, RdV is almost thornless/thornless. Mine were thornless. There is a RdV imposter out there... I do not know what the differences are. There are GW threads on the topic.

I would have been happy with RdV, since it was on my list to buy, but if it's an once bloomer that doesn't even bloom much, it's on it's way out.

Does ARE carry the right RdV?

My RdV repeats blooming. I dont think its the best bloomer but it is very pretty and unique. I also think the foliage is pretty and graceful looking. I love the scent of the leaves when rubbed.

David Austin does carry and sell old roses. Reine des Violettes is one of the ones he carries and sells.

    Second set of blooms ....

Could it be Young Lycidas? These 2nd set of blooms look better.

Dave, I guess it is possible. Does anyone grow Young Lycidas? Dont see it much on the forums. Does it bloom in clusters? Fragrance is quite nice, strong old rose.

I believe it does bloom in clusters with a strong fragrance oh, but I thought that blooms were smaller individually. It's meant to have a very cascading habit.

Thank you Vapor, this sounds like YL. I had to tie up the canes to a trellis. the blooms are small. Will give him? a deep haircut and fertilize in the fall to see if I can get him to bloom more.

What kind of sun exposure does it get, Rekha? Other forum members that grow it could verify this but I thought YL is not a shy bloomer but blooms pretty regularly. The crimson heart and magenta/lavender our petals appear like it could be it. The growth habit you describe sounds like it fits. I have not grown YL yet but it should be arriving this week.

Dave, mine is in part sun. I can move it, but it had not ever bloomed, so was thinking of removing, will wait and see. I can trim some of my neighbors trees that are shading it to see if it helps.

Rekha, I know it's a pain and I'm in a different growing area, but I might try moving it. I've had several roses never bloom and even go backwards until I moved them in to a full sun condition. Now they are great bloomers. Just a though before you get rid of it or just send it my way! LOL!

Thanks vapor...its a pain, I did not buy this particular one and I dont have full sun spot available right now. Let's see, I might stick it in a pot or if ever we create a corner bed, I'll move him....

Does YL have a lighter reverse?

    last modified: 7 years ago

Young Lycidas does have a lighter reverse but not as light as your pic shows, Rekha. The color of the blooms look possibly like YL but the bloom form is off. But more than the blooms the leaves look nothing like YL’s. YL’s leaves are distinctive in that they are ‘wrinkly’.

The leaves of your rose look more like Reine des Violettes. The imposter RdV is said to have thorns but I don’t know about the light reverse to the blooms.

YL does bloom in small clusters; buds are small and I am always surprised to see how large the blooms are - 4 to 5 inches.

    YL pics for comparison -

RdV - blooms are much smaller at 2.5 to 3 inches

Thank you Jo..I don't think it is YL...the foliage looks all wrong. Minne has a very light reverse, more than what the pic shows. Small blooms, 2", strong rose fragrance and quite thorny...

I have YL and I dont think the bloom form looks like YL's.

Head the imposter RdV is a once bloomer, if that is true, then what I have is not it. I am getting some sporadic tiny blooms..
