I grow across the top of Fothergilla Mt. Airy. I also grow into some of the smaller flowered, stiffer branched Hydrangea paniculata, though keeping any but Bobo within 4’ would be a chanenge and I am not certain it has sturdy enough branches.

Mine are growing through rhododendrons....only because the rhodies were already here. In my old garden, I'd just let them go wherever they wanted....most of the sprawlers or non-viners were in a mixed perennail/shrub border and they just filled up any gaps :-)

I have some in lilacs and hydrangeas. This year I’m going to try rhododendrons and a snow berry bush. I’ve never been a huge fan of snow berries but the kids brought one home from school back in the day so he’s part of the family, for better or worse. Fingers crossed triternata rubromarginata (sp) makes him a little more interesting

I also have one in a non suckering lilac. But I don’t know of any lilac that can be kept to 4’.

I have tried letting them go where they want but they have smothered perennials, grasses and a dwarf rhododendron to death....the integrifolias/sprawlers grow really well for me....I have some contained in cages and the barberries actually work really well, I'm just so over them.
