Eyeliner preferences

I've been looking for an eyeliner that goes on easily on older eyes. I currently have Clinique quickliner, and although it has been ok, it isn't great and I need to replace it. What do you use?

I have really old eyes, love Bobbie Brown Eye Liner Gel. Be sure you use a good brush.

LOL Maddielee! I've used a pencil for a long time now, so am curious about the gel. I like a subtle not well defined line that looks a bit more natural. Can you blend it to achieve that look pretty easily?

I use a warm charcoal gray pencil I get at Whole Foods (Mineral Fusion in Volcanic). It's soft enough to go on without pulling or dragging and blends/softens well. It looks really natural and lasts all day.

I just use a deep grey eyeshadow (almost black) applied over primer with a liner brush. I have tried so many different types of liner, but like that the shadow is subtle but still has presence and is easier for me to control and build than an honest-to-goodness liner.

I've been using Neutrogena pencil in Brushed Pewter. I see it's been discontinued so I'll be looking for something new.

I use cake shadow with a tiny brush and sort of pounce the liner on at the lash line. It doesn't seem to matter which brand of shadow I use. It's the stiff, angled, thin brush that makes my application work.

“Can you blend it to achieve that look pretty easily?”

It dries quickly, you have to be quick to smear it. I like it because it lasts all day. I also use an eye lash curler, after lining my upper lids. That usually softens the line enough for me.

I used to use a pencil but after not being able to get the same one and trying different ones, I got frustrated and tried a darker eyeshadow applied wet with a very fine, round brush. That was okay but took more time and tended to be more than I usually preferred. I'm using eye shadow dry on a thin angled eyeliner brush. I can use any color on my palette and it gives a more subtle look dry, which is what I generally prefer -- but I can wet it or go with a different color for a bolder look. Infinite options. Works for me.

I use a concealer as an eyelid base. Then my eyeliner. If I wear eye shadow (a couple of times a week) I put it on *after* my eyeliner. It helps soften the line and the eyeliner goes on easier underneath.

I used the same Bobbi Grown gel as Maddielee for years and then switched to the BB Long-wear Eye Pencil in Steel grey. Much easier to use and doesn’t dry out like the gel did. It stays on and doesn’t run into the eyelid crease. I don’t wear eyeliner every day since I retired.

I second Urban Decay. I have several colors. I use mostly Mushroom (taupe) and Stash (a golden green).

I do the same as IdaClaire and Fun2bHere, and use a dark eyeshadow. In my case, it's a dark grayish purple, that looks like very dark grey. I also apply it with a very thin, angled eyeliner brush. I find eyeshadow is much more forgiving, than a harsh line on older eyelids, which often happens with regular eyeliner and pencils.

I'm another who uses powder eyeshadow for liner. Darkest gray to almost black. I use a very fine very short brush similar to the one pictured above (mine are Stila and chanel). I stroke a soft wider line on dry, both eyes, then moisten my same brush and apply a thin close-to-the-lash line. The result is much softer than a liquid product and does not pull like a pencil might.

Right now I'm using a Shu Uemura shadow to achieve my eyeliner. I never have to touch up into evening. It doesn't come/wear off until I remove makeup at night. I've used a little touch of Lancome effacernes concealer as an eye makeup foundation for years! Very light touch applying it in a color that matches my skin including my lids ;0)

I don't use eyeliner at all. Just the way it is.

I've been using a cheap 99 cent Wet n Wild brown pencil for a long time. I also have more expensive ones that I don't care for as much as I do the WnW! I tend to gravitate to the pencil style that you sharpen, I like the point you get better than an automatic pencil. I just don't see any reason to pay more...I am also not allergic to the WnW which is a huge plus for me!

    lost everything I typed

Revlon Colorstay as mention above. Used daily for years and years now. Creamy, blends well and stays put until I wash my face. I don‘t even have to use an eye primer to keep it on.

Another Urban Decay 24/7 fan! I have about 5 different colors.

Wow, so much variety! I only wear liner and mascara...so I’m rather ignorant of all these options. I have never gone in to a makeup department and worked with one of the sales people. Because I like a pretty basic approach I’ve thought it frivolous...I think I may have to make an appointment and do that just to explore options a bit more! Thanks so much for giving me some direction.

I had been using Revlon Colorstay and a few others and maybe as my eyes got older, they were less easy to apply . Someone on here recommended JORDANA pencils , which seem to only sold at Walgreen's from what I can see. They are 2.99 and work great and last a long time.

I have a big problem with eyeliner pencils not staying put. Seems like the creamier they are, the more they want to shift location, or just disappear completely. I've actually found that eyeshadow used as liner lasts much longer on me, which surprised me when I first made that discovery!

Ida, I seem to have just the opposite problem. If I try to use powder eyeshadow it flakes and smears more than my longwear pencil. I use longwear primer either way. And I apply a fine line with a fine brush if I try eyeshadow and use the same technique you describe, but after a few hours it’s all over the place, including in my eyes. I’m using good shadows so don’t think that is the problem.

I'm with Outside on this. My eyeliner stays put until I wash it off at night, no smearing or melting. I can put it on at 8 a.m. and if I'm going somewhere that evening, just touch it up slightly. Key is finding the right formula that stays put, is smudge-able (intentionally), and doesn't drag when applied. And the right color. I went through multiple brands before I found the right warm neutral charcoal that was neither brown nor blue.

I have an eyeliner that does not want to go on. It is dry and impossible. Thanks for the suggestions I am going to try Revlon now. Glad I found this thread!

Y'all are making me think I should wear makeup....I honestly didn't think anyone (especially my age) wore eye makeup any more. I dye my eyelashes but that's about it.

Also, not meaning to hijack, but my lips are practically nonexistent now, and I'm so envious of those with lips. ESPECIALLY those who rock a red...
