Need some help with display options!

last modified: 7 years ago

So we are still moving in. Part of my issue is that I don’t have anywhere to display collections or books. I have pared waaay back but still. I have a bunch of pottery that we would like to see, some is bought but most are gifts, or made by my daughter.

I have a landing at the bottom of the stairs that seems like a good spot. I would like some glass as we have 3 German Shepherds and their tails can take stuff out easily. Pics,

I

The billy bookcase from ikea may work.(not this color necessarily)

I can fit up to 3 of these in that space. They are only 11” deep.

I think that would not be a good place since there is not much space at the bottom already and 11” is pretty shallow for pottery Can you post pictures of the rest of your space I love the idea of pottery on display with all the wood.

I don't think that is an idea place. Lets look around your space for a better choice.

Ok, so I honestly hated this house from day one. Mostly because there is no sense to much of it. Still not sure how I got talked into it lol.

So here is the great room. The rug(a family piece), the couch and the leather recliners are staying. Everything else is temporary. So far this is the best spot for a tv. And yes, the tv must be in this room :). The wall where the stairs is designated for my dry bar.

Well you know what everyone is going to say so I will start it off. No relocating the TV to above the fireplace? The room if screaming to have the sofa face the fireplace. The rug would look nice situated the other way on the fireplace to confirm that. Love you sofa color in this space!

How much pottery are we talking about? I would think about putting floating shelves above the buffet in the eating area and placing your pottery on them. It would be a nice impact to have them there and all together!

Honestly, I would get your furniture set before figuring out where to place your collectibles. That way you can buy a piece of furniture for them that you know will be set and look intentional in its placement long term.

Are you open to furniture placement suggestions?

The fireplace is an actual heat source for the house so we can’t put the tv up there as it would have to be hung way to high too avoid heat damage. Plus running wiring through the rock would be in the $1000s. Like I said, so many stupid things about this house.

The buffet in the kitchen is going to be moved. I’m actually doing built ins around the window as I need to create a coat closet and additional kitchen storage.

This is my proposed layout for the great room.

And the mock up of built ins in the dining area.

The only other option for the tv is the corner, but it will be in front of 2 windows. This is where prior owners had the tv.

I would put the TV on the stair wall, flip the sofa to be in front of the windows, and move the dry bar to under the kitchen pass through. If you keep the TV between the windows, you will always be limited on size, but if it goes on the stair wall, hubby can have a bigger one (hint hint).

Okay first remove your floor lamp that is just floating on the corner of your rug in you plans. Whatever you do that must go!

Second I am going to suggest you invest in a retractable TV cabinet. Your TV on the wall jammed between those two windows just doesn't look right. These pieces are an investment but sometimes they are a needed one so that you can make a room with a lot of windows like yours work

Touchstone Grand Elevate, Unfinished Oak TV Lift Cabinets For Up To 60" · More Info

They come in many different styles , finishes so this is just an example for you. Another obvious spot for the TV is on your stair wall. The dry bar can easily be relocated to another wall.

In your built ins in the eating area why not display the pottery along the top of them? Looks like you have glass cabinet doors up at top.

Love your dining room mock up!

I would make a few tweaks to the living room...I would play up some asymmetry with your TV stand and do a long-low media cabinet under the windows that will unify your TV's placement currently. That way you can keep the TV where it is. I would move the two matching leather chairs to flank the other side of your (awesome) green sofa with the thin small table between them. Then, use both black tables side by side as your coffee table. Move the yellow accent chair to the right of the fireplace. I would relocate the black leather chair with ottoman elsewhere.

I would then purchase a cabinet piece, that matches your new built-ins for your pottery. I would place it between your dining area door and window.

    Hope this helps!

Stupid black chair and ottoman are staying. Sorry forgot that. That is hubbies chair and he really wants to keep it.

Floorlamp is really an antique table, lamp unit. It can go in another room. Kind of like this, but mine isn’t this ornate on the bottom.

The space near the pass through is the walkway to the powder room and master, so can’t block it with dry bar.

Would it be possible to scooch the rug away from the fireplace a bit? Seems everything is crowded into that corner.

You could incorporate a shelf above every window, built into the trim work....twenty years ago I had a really good picture of this concept, but it is long gone! When I get off this bus, I’ll try and draw a picture. But no glass doors on the landing...when you trip and fall over a dog coming down the stairs, it won’t just be broken bones...there will be a big mess and lots of stitches! Is it the style or the layout (or both?) that you hate?

Yes, I am planning on moving the rug out about a foot or so from the fireplace. It’s just so huge I have to wait until I have my girlfriend here to help.

Shelves over the windows all the way around like a deep plate rail? Sounds promising.

So when we first bought it I hated the style and the layout. I’ve slowly come to really like all the wood and such and can work with that aspect. The layout is my nemesis. Light switches and return air vents in odd spots, windows everywhere but not in a good way(go to low so can’t put furniture under windows for example). Doors that swing the opposite of what seems rights, that kind of thing.

This is the tv stand I was looking into. It’s an easel style so no drilling into the walls (which is to be avoided in real wood as patching is a pain).

I can put this where the tv currently is, or in the corner like the previous owners. Neither is perfect but the corner setup blocks 2 windows possibly.

Also, I get that focusing on the fireplace is the norm, but that’s not a big deal in this room. We are expanding the porch and adding a fireplace out there, so that is the space for socializing around a fire. This fireplace is nice to have and will get used to heat the house, but the room itself is our media room. DH and I are big movie/series watchers, as are our kids when they come to visit. Big bowls of popcorn, wine, beer, margaritas and snacks with a movie is what we love to do. So much so that my new daughter in-law packed a bag of popcorn as a surprise for my son on their honeymoon so they could continue our“Friday night movie night” tradition.

So I want to honor the fireplace in the decor, but need the room to function for our family the way we will use it 95% of the time.

The TV easel is a good idea. Since it's on wheels, you can reposition it for optimal viewing, then tuck it back between the windows when not in use.

We still haven't solved the original display problem. How about a narrow glass-fronted display cabinet behind the sofa for part of it?

Grover, that’s a great option. I looked into that but everything I found was too low. Your pic looks like a better sized piece.

So my sofa back is 36” high. It doesn’t have a straight back. Does it look odd to have a gap due to the angle? Everything I’m finding is 30” high, is that too low?

Here are some photos that show sofa tables with rolled top sofas or angled sofas that leave a space. You will be fine

Please, no glass doors anywhere in the staircase. One fall, trip, or tumble can be deadly for young and old alike.

Consider having a decorative shallow boxed out vent cover built. These pics. are not the style of your room of course, but built in a wood tone and dimension that is aesthetically in line with your room. A decorative metal grille can be purchased to incorporate in the design. Not only would it serve to improve the look of this large vent in your otherwise pretty room, it would be a good grounding for some suspended shelves that could continue up the wall and running over to the left to above the kitchen cut out also.

Some more - and a closer look at the decorative metal grating to which I ‘m referring. Also meant to say I think your easel find is a good idea for the TV ;) .

Annette, it doesn't have to be a cabinet, though I was thinking a cabinet with glass doors would mean less dusting. But a sofa table with shelves would work for display as well.

I was going to suggest a deep plate rail, but not just above the windows. I would put it around all the great room, below where the rafter tails end; about where the previous owners had those two long pieces hung above the doors (just at the top of those.) Any pieces that are more utilitarian and not so interesting decoratively could go in a cabinet behind the sofa as grover suggested. I would put the larger, impressive ones up top for display, color and interest. You might have some taller ones you'd like to set on the hearth, or on a mantel which you can add.

Something even this deep might be what you need, depending on the size of your pieces.

Just chiming in as you are getting great advice....you have wonderful vaulted ceilings! People will be drawn to look at them. Would you consider horizontal shelving around the room on which to put your pottery based on shape or color or size......no puppy tails up high.

I'd consider staining some of the wood in the home.

Can you combine your staircase with bookcases?
