oak kitchen update

This is our current kitchen, except now we have replaced all appliances with black stainless. We plan to replace the countertops with a white quartz and add a backsplash (we love the look of white subway with a black grout). After making those changes, do you think it will change the appearance of the cabinets? We don’t love the color, but painting is not in the plans anytime soon. We also want to replace our floors with a wide plank, modern lvp. What colors would look good? We will also be repainting the whole house repose grey.

I think your oak cabinets could use an updated antique brass hardware. Brass hardware and white quartz countertops will put the wow factor into the whole kitchen.

This is called "re-muddling". You just keep changing things in hopes that one day you'll walk into your kitchen and it will have become the "kitchen of your dreams"! It won't as the cabinets are oak and you don't like oak.

What is the flooring now? Is that hardwood? If so, for heaven's sake don't take it up and put down LVP.

Black grout on the backsplash would be VERY busy with all the grain of the oak.

What Anglophilia and chloebud said. Changing counters and adding a tile backsplash is not going to change the appearance of the cabinets. They are oak, changing things other than the cabinets isn’t going to change the cabinets. If you don’t like the oak then don’t waste $ on counters and backsplash. Put that $ in a fund to revamp the whole kitchen, starting with the cabinets.

Like you, I love the look of subway tile with black grout. As great as that combo is, I don't think it is right for your space and I don't think it would change the look of your cabinets. I think I have the same exact cabinets and I feel your pain. I don't think changing the hardware will change the appearance either. I think the only thing that will give you a dramatic change would be to either paint them or replace them.

I have LVP in my kitchen and love it. With your cabinets, I think you will want to look for a floor in a color that is darker and relates to the color of the grain the the cabinets. I would not do a wood look if you can avoid it at all. A couple examples of "not wood lookalike" LVPs are below (neither are the color you'd want to use). I'm not sure if you are going for a more traditional or modern vibe with the update.

There are not a ton of LVP options that are based on tile or stone or metal looks - there's probably 8 options in "wood look" for every "not-wood" option. So you might want to figure out the floor FIRST and then the countertop. Seems like there are more countertop options.

Please don't use black grout on your backsplash. Besides showing every tiny variation in grout spacing and tile cuts, it is a very dated look. If you want to have subway tile but have them show up more, then get the beveled white subway tile. You get a three-dimensional effect from them but with white and white grout they really stand out nicely and since they have a kind of masonry feel because of the dimensional aspect to them, the older oak cabinets will go just fine. For your floor I would try and match the oak cabinets with the porcelain tile as much as you can.
