Buying a water softener

May 25, 2019

I recently bought a new home that doesn't have a water softener. I considered not getting one, but have read they help appliances last longer. The problem is is that I don't have a lot of money to spend. I called about seven local water softener companies to get quotes. The least expensive I found was $800. The most expensive was about $1600. A couple people told me the cheaper water softener were essentially worthless and they wouldn't recommend anything that they wouldn't install in their own home. My question is, is it worth it to buy a "cheap" water softener? Or is it better to not get one for a year or so and then get a more expensive one? I don't need whistles and bells. Just a simple water softener for two people. Also, is it cheaper to buy the water softener from someone who doesn't do the installs and then hire a plumber who doesn't sell water softeners to install it? Thank you!
