I use a service called Rayne, for $32/month they change out a whole-house filter and works great. There is an initial install charge (~$100). I believe Culligan provides similar. If this appeals check your local nextdoor.com or neighbors to see what they're happy with. Works great for me. And yes, you really want soft water or you'll pay dearly later for pipes, fixtures, etc.

CHeck with a plumber who does not sell units. They'll know best. In a previous house, we had an Eco, excellent machine.

i would have it tested by someone who doesn't sell water softeners. in most cases the town can tell you the hardness for free

most people have no idea if their water is hard or soft, so you do need outside confirmation.

You have to test your water - you can't size a softener without knowing how hard your water is. Get a hach test kit for $20 to test it yourself

A good Fleck based water softener with 10% cross-linked resin can be purchased online for about $600.
