Oh no! That looks terrible! Mother Nature has a nasty streak to her. So sorry! That's exactly what I am afraid of. The weather is so unpredictable.

Oh no. I am so sorry. Hail really can do a lot of damage. I hope you discover they recover at least somewhat. If not, next year they will be back in all their glory.

I’m about 35 miles west of Chicago, it’s raining again right now and have a tornado watch till 9:00pm....argh. The bad damage was mostly in my backyard. The front yard has beds under 45 yo blue spruce and Norwegian pine. Those trees earned their keep today. Despite the 1/2” to 1” hail they protected a lot of my plants. Here is the good news from today, took these photos right after the rain stopped. A few holes in the leaves but not too bad. A lot of torn tree leaves all over.

Oh yes. I see the "good news!" The spruce and the pine were plant savers! Your front garden held up well. Glad to hear the good news!

Oh Sherry that is just adding insult to injury. I was going to comment on your thread about losing some plants and some with leaves curling up in the huge amounts of rain you have been enduring - now hail. Your Hosta were all looking so happy. Thank goodness for the evergreens protecting the ones in front! Small comfort that the damaged ones will put on new growth. Sending hugs to you.

omg Sherry! I have experienced the post-hail salad shooter hosta garden. It's miserable. That is actually how I found the hosta forum because I was seeking advice for how to cope. About the only good thing is that it's very early in the season so recovery is possible. I recommend giving them a foliar feeding of liquid kelp in a garden sprayer to help them recuperate. So sorry! It sucks.

Each day, I have been going out and covering my peonies to keep them safe from hail. The hostas are too numerous at this point to even try. But I have that one peony that I have waited 3 years to see bloom so I am not going down without a fight!

The difference in damage between front and back yards is nuts- I can’t believe your weather!

I’m feeling pessimistic about my gardens at the end of the season. It finished raining about a half hour ago, another three inches of rain in about 45 minutes. I already have several plants in distress from all of the rain, today makes matters worse again. Beside my hosta I have approximately 150 daylilies. I’m wondering how they will handle this deluge of a spring.

our forecast said "wind..rain..hail"..I put my annuals in the garage..not a bad job there's not too many..if trees help than my hostas will be ok..unless a limb falls on them!..the silver lining for you - the worst of your damage is in the back!..I hope as you clean up it's not too bad..

Oh Sherry, I am so so sorry. It really takes another hosta lover to understand how devastating damage like this can be. I'm glad things are better in the front yard. They will come back but it is so hard seeing your garden plants shredded like that. I hope the rain stops soon and things dry out. We have had a lot of rain here but nothing like you had. :(

Aw, nice to know that front held ok. I usually end up with few leaves torn here and there as we often windy here. I think you will have decent recovery yet so while it won't be pristine it will straighten up a bit .

You had hail to contend with, and I'm sorry for the damage it caused to your hostas. Even though I was outside til 1 a.m. frantically putting up stakes, cutting up garbage bags, and taping them to the stakes to save my hostas and heuchies from the ravages of the idiot "landscape workers" spraying Roundup right next to my garden, they STILL managed to get weedkiller on my beautiful heuchie Frost, leaving it with numerous brown spotted ruined leaves. As my friend Chris and I labored out in my garden today, potting up my hostas and heuchies in fabric grow bags, we were astounded to see the damage to Frost (and some brown spots on my gorgeous hosta Royal Tiara) spread before our very eyes, the brown areas getting larger.
