The more i read about maples on Gardenweb, the more I hesitate to plant one... many people are critical of the root system as they apparently surface and interfere with or make planting nearby plants impossible.. some concerns crop up about the branching structure of the autumn blaze, a tree I am considering. And chlorosis is an issue in the reds that aren't crossed (the franksred could suffer), The spot I'd like to plant a maple is a moist spot with decent soil. Drainage is ok.. it's a mix of clay and humus.. It stays moist all year as it is a low point in our yard, even a bit wet in early spring... There are some older shrubs and some recently planted ones that would ultimately be affected by the maples shade and root system - but they could work as understory plants (serviceberry, aronia, pagoda dogwood, ninebark).

I suppose I am concerned mostly with this dreaded root system that will eventually appear and the strength and structure of (or lack thereof) some of the freeman hybrids... many people say that these maples completely take over a large area..In terms of roots affecting nearby structures or sidewalks - but that is not an issue in my case... it would be planted at the rear of my property... the space is there. Autumn Blaze seems to receive the most criticism.. but it's a dependable performer especially in terms of color which is important. I do want a vibrant red/orange dependable fall performer.

I can easily get my hands on FR and AB and for good prices (under $80-$90 for 8' to 9'). The Franksred intrigues me the most (it gets great reviews) as it is not as common around here but we have neutral to mildly alkaline soil (low 7s). Reds do grow naturally around our area and do display good to very good color most years..

So between the 3 which would you choose given my conditions and requirements? Or are the concerns about maples legitimate? Should I consider another tree altogether?
