I would recommend painting the cabinets if you never liked the stain color, that is the most cost effect big impact move to make. To pick a color - what is your style? Have you had a chance to look at kitchens that you love? Decide what you like about those spaces and implement that same look into your kitchen. It may be keeping your cabinet color and adding glass doors (just cut out the center) very low cost. You need to start with something that inspires you... Do some research!

Have you considered adding a backsplash? That would make a big difference... On a side note - that white vent above the cabinets could be painted the same colour as the wall so you don't notice it as much.

I think painting out the cabinets in an off-white and adding a glass backsplash would do the trick. Also updating the pulls to sleek door handles would also be an affordable update option. Other than that, just de-clutter, and Bob's your uncle! :)

I agree....adding a backsplash could really add some finesse to you kitchen. As well I would change out those tiny pendant lights for something more substantial. I think lots of people think tiny lights are better but to me they just get lost....and zzzzz....you could also change the hardware to add some interest.

Here's a couple of ideas that would work nicely in your space - whether you choose to change your cabinet colour or not.

Since this kitchen is incorporated into the great room, I think it should blend more with the wall color. In other words, it should not scream "Kitchen!". I would use a solid stain, and refinish the cabinets to a taupe color in the same family as your walls.

Is the countertop grey corian? I think changing out the counter top with a great granite or quartz adding a glass backsplash new hardware and update the pendants to a blown glass.

Paint them your favorite color. Replace the handles and pulls, get new lighting, and better floor tiles. For a start.
