Accent wall question

last modified: 7 years ago

I will be painting this wall in my family room in an accent colour, most likely a teal colour. The walls in the rest of the family room will be lighter. My question is when I paint the wall, should I paint just the back wall in the accent colour or paint the bulk heads and side pieces as well?

It would help to see a shot of this wall from farther back.

Paint the back wall only, not the side walls and the soffit. Won't look really good though, without painting the red brick. Even if you just put a wash over the brick. I would paint it white.

I usually don't promote an accent wall, but it could look great in this case, if you paint the wall and fireplace

The colors would need to be pulled into the rest of the room. Also, your family photo can be in the space, but the photos and the cd's should not be on the main focal point wall.

Here are some inspiration photos. When you consider the main walls, accent walls and fireplace, be careful not to use 3 colors. I would limit it to 2. See how in the first photo, the main wall and fireplace are the same color. The accent wall in a second color.

Here, the fireplace and accent wall are all the same color. Main walls are a second color.

Make sure you pull in the accent color in the space. See the orange pillow on the chair?

If this was my design dilemma, I would start with just painting the back wall, then live with it for a while. If you don't like it then paint the bulkheads. I have a feeling you may want to paint the whole thing. Just painting the back wall will look like 2 coloured squares flanking the fireplace and will make your fireplace look squat.

Judy's idea of painting the whole wall black is stunning!

I love black walls but they require a cetain design style and I don’t see that in this space from wht I see.IMO you already have an accent wall it is the fireplace so I don’t think a colored wall next to it is a good idea. I would however want to see the whole space not just that wall.

If you don't paint the side and soft, the accent wall will look quite tiny. I'm not a fan ay all of accent walls though,

Paint all the area. You don't want to cut it up. You can do the brick in the same color, but satin, for a monochrome look... or contrast it by using your trim white, or black.

I would also try to create symmetry by using identical furniture pieces on either side of the fireplace. The niches look too empty and yet have a lot of small items that make it somewhat busy. I might get a pair of related art prints or matching mirrors to go above the furniture pieces. The photos could be located to another area. Just a suggestions.

I would paint the back wall.

I would not make a structurally odd and functionally busy wall an "accent" for the room. Skip this approach altogether, or accent a wall that has blandess problems, not crazy feature problems.

I don't think this paint is a well thought out concept for this room. Here is the wall in neutral and then with teal. Not a good look IMO. You're selecting teal paint because why? Is there anything in the room that is currently teal?
